how to remove a rear - acdf6cf.gif

The rear wheel bearing and hub unit are replaced as a unit.

  1. With the vehicle on the ground, loosen the spindle nut.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4. Remove the brake disc retaining screws.
  5. Unbolt the brake hose brackets from the knuckle.
  6. Remove the caliper bracket mounting bolts and hang the caliper out of the way with a piece of wire.
  7. Remove the brake disc. If the disc is frozen on the hub, screw two 8 x 1.25mm bolts evenly into the disc to push it away from the hub.
  8. Remove the spindle nut and pull the hub unit off of the spindle.

Clean the backing plate and the mating surfaces of the brake disc and hub with brake cleaner. Clean the spindle, washer, and hub with solvent.
To install:
  1. Inspect the hub unit for signs of damage or wear. If the bearings are worn, the entire unit must be replaced.
  2. Install the hub unit and spindle washer onto the spindle. Install the spindle nut but do not tighten it.
  3. Install the brake disc and tighten the retaining screws to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  4. Install the brake caliper and tighten the mounting bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm). Install the brake hose brackets onto the knuckle and tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  5. Install the rear wheels and lower the vehicle.
  6. With the vehicle on the ground, tighten the new spindle nut to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm), then stake the nut with a punch.
  7. Tighten the wheel nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
  8. Test the operation of the brakes.

ADJUSTMENT

The wheel bearings are not adjustable or repairable and should be replaced if found defective.

Thanks for using FixYa!!

Hi,
The accord is a great little car. To remove the rear hub is relatively easy:
All there was to changing the rear hub and bearing, is:
Once the car is jacked up - secure and the wheels remove [ loosen while on the ground]
1- remove the caliper and the caliper anchor, remove the rotor,
2- then remove the axle nut, and that is it.
The hub and bearing should pull right off.
So for anyone changing the rear hub and bearing on a Honda accord, that's it in a nut shell.
Thanks for letting me serve you - while this isn't a HONDA ACCORD - it can serve to orientate you to the procedure so CLICK HERE to see a similar assembly removed
CLICK HERE for the Hub Buster - it is quite a handy tool too.

Best of luck.

How do you replace the front rotors on a 1996 honda accord?

Remove wheel. Take off outer driveshaft nut. Remove lower ball joint pinch bolt & separate ball joint from spindle. Pull rotor & spindle out & away to pull driveshaft outer splined end out of rotor center hub. Look on the back of the spindle for the 4 bolts that hold in the wheel bearing. Use a 12 point socket to remove the 4 bolts and remove wheel bearing from spindle (out towards the wheel stud side). Probably will have to use a air chisel to get it out. Once it's out undo the 4 bolts on the outer (wheel stud side) of the rotor and remove the rotor from the hub. Clean & lube the hole where the bearing was in the spindle & the inner face of the hub. MAKE SURE IT'S CLEAN otherwise you may get a pulsation on braking if theres a piece of rust or dirt between the rotor center & the hub face. Reverse procedure to install.

If the rear bolts don't come out then you will have to use a slide hammer to separate the bearing to replace the rotor and there is a very good chance you will need to replace the wheel bearing after you're done (noisy on road test).

Not the job to do at home, usually an easy 2-3 hours per side if things go bad (book time is 2.2 hrs per side). Use good quality rotors as you don't want to have to do it again because a cheap rotor gave you a pulsation.

How to replace a wheel hub bearing on drum brakes on a honda accord 1999 4 cly

First thing to do is jack up the rear end and put wood blocks behind the front wheels for your safety. Next thing is to remove the rear wheel, then using a flat head screwdriver, pry off the center cap on the hub. Now grab a 32mm socket and a decent breaker bar to break that center nut free. Now, remove the two philips head screws that hold the brake in place and then using a 13mm socket, remove the two bolts that hold the brake caliper on, they are located behind the splash shield. While you are at it, take a 11mm socket and remove the handbrake cable holder and the brake hose holder bolts. Now swing that caliper out of the way and slide off the brake hub and bearing and replace with the new one.

How to replace 1996 accord front disc rotors , as this year model is hard to remove rotors , please help

You must have what they call "trapped rotors" on your car.First thing is to jack the car, remove the wheel, unbolt the axle nut, remove the calliper and bracket and hang caliper out of the way with a bungi cord.Next look behind the steering knuckle where the axle goes through the hub and from back there you should see 4 bolts holding the wheel bearing hub assembly to the steering knuckle. You will need to remove the 4 bolts and very carfully remove the wheel bearing hub assembly from the knuckle. If the car has the dust shield you may have to remove the 2 phillips head screws to remove the shield and the hub assembly together.(If the car has ABS please be carfull not to hurt the wires going to it these may have to be unplugged and moved also)After you have the bearing assy. out remove the 4 bolts holding the rotor to the hub.Now you will notice the funny shapped hole in the center of the rotor where you can turn it to fit over the flange where you bolt the bearing to the car and there you go the rotor is off. REMEMBER NOT TO HIT ON THE HUB WHERE THE WHEEL BOLTS ON TO REMOVE THE BEARING ASSEMBLEY FROM THE CAR.THIS WILL DAMAGE THE BEARING!!!!!!! Also remember to re torque bearing to proper specs so bearing doesn't get damaged as you drive. (181 ft.lbs.)

How do you change the rear wheel bearings

The rear hub and bearing are combined into a single assembly. The bearing is sealed for life and requires no lubrication or attention. If the bearing is worn or damaged, you have to replace the entire hub and bearing assembly:
loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, place it on jack stands and remove the rear wheel.
Remove the brake drum or caliper and disc.
Remove the dust cover (in the center).
Unstake the hub retaining nut (bend the part out that locks it), unscrew the nut and remove the thrust washer then remove the hub assembly.
Install the new assembly and thrust washer, tighten the new nut to torque 134 lbs, then stake in the edge of the nut (opposite of unstaking).
Tap the dust cover into place, all around the edge until it's seated.
Reverse removal for the rest.
Hope this helps you understand the process.

93 honda accord rotors

Your Accord has what is called "Trapped Rotors". They actually fit behind the hub. The procedure to remove them is not complicated, but it is time consuming.
Here is how I do it:
1) Remove axle retaining nut.
2) Remove brake caliper and bracket.
3) Remove lower ball joint retaining nut and use pickle fork to loosen spindle from lower ball joint.
4) Remove axle from hub.
5) On the back of the spindle, remove four bolts that attach hub/bearing to spindle.
6) Use slide hammer to remove rotor/hub assembly.
7) Remove 4 bolts attaching rotor to hub.
8) While it is a snug fit, the hub bearing does slide through center of rotor to remove it.
Installation is in reverse order.
A bad bearing usually makes a growling noise while driving.
