Check the power steering fluid level. Left is torque side and probably tightens the belt as right it would loosen the belt a little so check the belt for sloppyness too. Hope this helps, The Raz
Ok it's time to check your tie rod ends and the stuff down there on the trouble side. Have someone turn the steering back and forth while you look under the car. Whatch all the rod ends that control that tire as he works the steering. There may be something wore out and causing a bind. You can grease all the zert fittings too if you have a grease gun. Might as well do both sides. Check bothsides while your under there as well. Before getting under there make sure the emergency brake is set and it is in either park or neutral. Do Not touch any of the rods while he turns them unless you are sure you won't pinch a finger.. You will want to do this check with the wheels on the ground under pressure and when the problem occures. Let me know if you find out anything. We can keep looking if not. The Raz
Have someone turn the wheel while you look around the steering box. Seems like something is binding against the movement to the right. It is unlikely that the box is bad on only one direction but I supose something could have falling off inside and jams it while turning the right. Also check along the steering collum. going up into the fire wall. Any where any thing moves when turn it to the right. We want to illiminate everything we can before you have to replace the box. Did you grease the fittings under there? I would take that step first. If one of the ball joinst has become dry it would make it more difficult to turn. Also check on the steering box to see if there is any places to grease or oil. Let me know after you do these checks. You will need a grease gun. I would loan you mine but>>>>> Raz
You can try one more thing if you sure that nothing is binding on the right turn. Turn the wheel all the way to the left and hold it there tightly. Then loosen the hose line and and turn the wheel all the way to the right to bleed it out with hope that air comes out. Hold the wheel tight to the right while you tighten the hose back down. Have some fluid handy to refill the resivor. If this doesn't do it I am afraid I am at a loss, I hate to tell you to replace the gear box incase I am missing something. I don't want you to spend money you work so hard for. I want to help you and if you were close enough I would make a special trip to give you a hand. I hate being stumped but I just can't think of anything else. You may want to try for a few more answers before making the final descision. I hope you will keep me informed on your progress so I will know and learn what I do't know now for future references to help others. Let Me know if this last thing does any thing for you. Good Luck Raz

If it is 4wd you may have a problem with your front differential. GMCs are known for having front differential axle seals leaking. If all the fluid is out metal parts may be binding.

I doubt it's your 4x4. Most transfer case will start turning the front driveshaft, meaning that BOTH front wheels would try to turn.
Could be a brake pad/caliper locking up on your left wheel. That'll make that wheel turn slower resulting in the veering left.
Could also be a wheel bearing. However usually you'll hear a grinding noise to go along with that. And it'll pull rather consistently in that direction rather than suddenly.
Or, what first comes to mind is that your steering box is loose, or the gear inside the steering box is stripped in one spot. Or your front tie rods could be shifting or possibly ball joints. These would cause a sudden shifting/veering.
All of these things are front end related. And also very dangerous. Take it down to any alignment shop, have them put it on a lift, and diagnose immediately.
Worse case scenerio is that a front end part breaks and sends you out of control and into someone else. Please get it checked. A diesel Suburban could do a lot of damage.

Sounds like you have air in your steering system. I would start by looking for any leaks on your steering system like hose to fitting crimps, steering pump, etc. Check your steering fluid level to make sure it is full and also look for bubbles on the dip stick. If everything looks good, start the vehicle and turn the wheels all of the way to the left and then to the right. Do this while the vehicle is in park and repeat at least 5 times. This will work out any air in your steering system. If the problem persists then the power steering pump may need to be replaced.

check tyres for wear-wheel balance needed if visibly ok-have a wheel alignment after a tyre rotation-best even tyres to be put on fronts-they will carry out a safety check all suspension and steering before doing the wheel alignment

if the steering box was bad would it be hard to turn in both directions?
