This usually means the ac refridgerant is low. In Econ mode the ac compressor will not turn on, your car is staying in Econ to avoid damage to the compressor. If you are low on refrigerant it means you have a leak. Don't just buy a can and refil, have a professional shop check for leaks and fill the system with the proper oil and add refrigerant to the proper pressure.
If the a/c does not engage as a result of the electronic control system in your 1996 Cadillac, the climate control system may need to be replaced.
However, if the problem is being caused by low charge of R134a in the system, have the system charged before changing that electronic part.
I have never seen a Cadillac Climate Control System do this, which leads me to believe that it may be more electronic than refrigerant pressure related.
If the refrigerant pressure was low in the system, the climate control system should still stay on 'auto' mode, I think, and simply blow warm air.
There is a problem with the air condition, econ, means the ac is not coming on,check to make sure the freon has not leaked out.If the freon is fine, see if the clutch is engaging on the compressor,if it is not ,then check the sensors on the liquid line ,along the firewall, they can go bad and the compressor will shut down, check all this and get back to me.
i have a 96 DeVille that did the same thing. It means your coolant tank is almost empty. It switches automaticlly to preserve based upon temp readings.
Your A/C system has lost its refrigerant, and will automatically go into "ECON" at that time. System will have to be leak tested , repaired, and recharged. Hope this helps.
sounds like there might possibly be a refrigerant leak which would need to be detected, repaired, and recharged, Then clear codes from computer. Your heater will still operate although it wont be DEHUMIDIFIER air as when it is working properly nor will the system stay on AUTO. Will stay on ECON
