They are all different but many systems will work if you leave key turned to on for 5 to15 minutes or so (need good battery) and then click right to start. Bigger issue may be chip key or ignition "reader" in vehicle may have lost contact due to age.
Could be a number of problems: 1: Faulty starter motor (brushes perhaps) or ignition wire to it fallen/broken off 2: Faulty relay 3: If it is an automatic there might be a wire off by the gear change consul 4: Faulty ignition key.

If you can remove the door panel, check to make sure none of the lock linkage is bent. If it is bent try bending it back. If its not bent pick up a can of white grease and spray all the moving parts inside your door that connect to the lock mechanism.
