Lancer ES 2003 Hot/Cold knob won't turn. Snaps back to where it previously was. Mechanic said would be very expensive to replace all cables and doors opening and closing air ducts. I'm wanting to try and fix this myself. Is there a schematic of the cables, pulleys and doors for the heat/AC system? I can't find a repair manual for this car. Mechanic is able to manually switch the doors/vents over to either AC or Heater. I want to know how he manually was able to move the heat/cold knob by moving the actual cables and doors. I don't want to continually pay him every spring and fall to switch the car back from heat to AC. I definitely don't have enough money ~ $700 to replace all cables/pulleys/doors.

You have a broken mounting at the end of the cable,at the housing thats why the temp. control knob doesnt work, you can remove the center console to gain access to pivot the broken piece manually and try to modify it so you can attach the cablr

actually, you don't have to remove the center console, radio or anything to change temps... I was told the same thing and even had the cables replaced for it to do the exact same thing... If you get down on the driver floor board and look under the dash, against the side of the middle console under the radio, you will see the cable... If you turn the knob to hot or cold, whichever you want and push or pull the cable at the same time, it will allow you to change it... I've been doing this with my 2003 Lancer for 3 years now... kinda stupid, but less expensive!!

Air temp is stuck on hot, if dial is turned it will break, can be put back on hot or cold only, is it a cable problem?

The cable is no longer straight, it has a kink in it. The best solution is to replace the cable. If you twist/work the dial gently you can coerce the dial to turn. Unfortunately it will still be a problem next time you need to adjust the temperature.

The knob for the heat turns but do not switch over to heat

The cable that flips the heater valve has become bent and will always bind until it is replaced. If twist the knob back and forth gently you can work the knob over to the heat side . The bad news , it is easy to turn the heat off , but it will be tricky to finesse the the heater back on again.

i just switched out my compressor today after over a year of my air doing this until it finally went out....(it only blew hot air). Replacing the compressor seemed to work. it is pricey though. dealership charges and arm and a leg. (i think the quoted the compressor at like 1000 not including labor.) my knobs are also messing up, but the one that switched from regular air to defrost. they only sell the knobs in a pack of 3 and are charging 300 for that....but i say good luck!!! its pricey...they shoulda recalled the cars. this is a very common problem i have been seeing. all they wanna do is make money off of it.
anyways the new compressor seems to be working.

AC/Heater control valve :Lancer 2003 Misubishi

The sliding switch on the console is stuck in the cold position and the knob is pulled off. Use pliers to jiggle the switch as best you can. Feel under the center console and you probably will find the cable that is hooked up to the flapper. You'll know because when you jiggle the cold/heater switch at the upper console, the cable will move slightly. At the hookup of the cable to the flapper down under the console (passenger side) try to work the flapper loose to the open (or close) position. At the same time work the sliding switch (with pliers). The flapper will come loose and function properly. Try not to knock of the AC button like I did in the process. It flew off some where under the passenger seat. I'll find it sometime before summer. Ha.

buy some lithium grease in a pressure can $8 "never can have too much lube" there is a plastic epoxy 2 stage in a syringe that works well for plastic repairs $8. alternativly get a second hand one from a dismantler. Use pliers to turn the knob back and forth untill you can move it freely before fitting the knob. Spray the flap lever it is operating on the heater box too. Good luck

Tempature control knob

There's a white lever under the dash near the steering wheel. You can change from heat to cold with that instead of the knob! If you look under there you'll see it and just push it up for heat pull towards yourself for cold.

2003 Lancer AC knob wont switch all the way over to heat...

this is due to the cable behind the dash kinking when you move the knob at worst you may need a new cable at best you can try to get your head under the dash and reposition the cable eg. cable tie it over to one side so it dosn't kink

its not to hard to do just a little hard to get to good luck
