The entire backlight or taillight does not come on when driving at night. the headlight comes on but the parking does not. The brakelight and the reverse light are okay. it is just that back light does nt come on for night driving.

I would think you have a loose connector coming off the floor wire harness. I'm assuming both rear lights are not working.
It should run along the floor from the rear combination lamps to junction box at the frt just below the dash. It runs along the floor underneath the carpet.

Have a 87-88 dodge Dakota and the reverse lights will not go off when the lights are on, how do I fix this?

Do the reverse lights operate normally with the headlights off? The reverse lights are on an entirely different circuit than than the park/headlights. In order for them to come on with the park/headlights, there will have to be a short to power on the circuit. Will the park lights come on if the vehicle is put in reverse with the headlight switch off? Look for shorted/corrodded wiring in the rear taillight circuit and connector plugs. Green corrossion in/around any plug or wiring is a sure sign of a problem

I turn my car on and then turn the headlights on. The taillights do not come on. When I turn my car off my taillights come on.When I leave my car in the off position then I turn my headlights just to park...

Sounds like your lights switch is coming apart. Recommend you remove the switch and test it with an ohmmeter. To remove the switch, pull the knob straight off, reach behind the dash and push in the 3 tabs (top, left, and right side) holding the switch in, pull the switch back under the dash, and remove the connector. To test, use the pinouts shown on the diagram below and the switch pictured. Basically, pin 2 should have 1.2 Kohm resistance to pin 7 in the OFF position and no continuity elsewhere. Similarly, in PARK, pin 2 should have 1.2 Kohm to pin 8 and no continuity elsewhere. In the HEAD position, pin 2 should have 1.2 Kohm to pin 4 and none elsewhere.

If the switch has failed as I suspect, you will find that in the OFF position, pin 2 will have 1.2 Kohm to pin 8 rather than pin 7.
Let me know if you have questions.

1998 XJ8 Vanden Plas taillight problem

Check the electrical grounds for the taillights. In fact, get a diagram and check all the easily accessible grounds. Many of these are in the engine bay.
