When your brake light comes on, it indicated that there is a problem in the brake system. This can be an imbalance in brake operation front to rear or other items but is mostly related to a system leak.If the brake fluid is low, check the system for signs of leaks. the rear of the master cylinder, all lines, calipers/cylinders. You can't fix the problem till you find what needs fixing, but adding brake fluid will only "buy" you time enough to get it home or to a shop. If you deal with someone reliable, have them take a look at it. You can replace leaking lines at home but it's a sometimes difficult job. As for brake fluid. Brake fluid is a hygroscopic fluid (means it absorbs water from the atmosphere) I have found it best to remove the contents of the reservoir once a year using a siphon or turkey baster. This eliminates problems caused by water (corrosion of calipers, wheel cylinders etc as well as fluid boiling on hard stops). If you do that, it's not necessary to bleed the system since you are not removing anything past the pistons in the master. Since you already have a problem, likely after the repair the system will be bled and the fluid replaced, so you won't need to do that till next year. Have the brakes looked at ASAP! n my world, nothing is more dangerous than not being able to stop when you need to!!! Good luck!
It's a common mistake people make , but brake fluid does not need to be changed other that deteriation or contamination. The fluid level is a specific cc volume. in a confined closed system .Topping up or replacing fluid alters the pre determined volume. !
The calipers and pads/shoes wear normally , and require more fluid from the resevoir to make up this increased distance to travel of brake componants, ie fairware and tear. Low fluid indicates pad wear (mostly) or leak and light comes on to warn driver, Replacing or topping up fluid masks the warning indicators to the driver.(fault still present) So brake pad wear is the most obvious problem here.. Sorry about the long winded explanation but tell all your friends about the "advice" as it is a dangerous practice to "top up " brake fluid. Brakes shouldn't loose fluid ! I hope this is the correct answer after all this typing ! Good luck
As long as the system has never been left open you can add Dot 3 fluid to the reservoir on the driver side to the fill mark, there is a low mark light that comes on when it gets low. It most likely is not leaking, the brakes have worn down so you will need to fill it again I would recommend having the brakes inspected so that you don't damage the drums or rotors on the car from wear. it will cost about $70.00 per wheel to have the rotors and drums turned and replaced pads or shoes turned and you may need wheel bearing packing as well but dought it they are supposed to last the lifetime of the car. hope this helps.

your brake fluid is low. I have a 2005 aveo that i took to dealer under warranty and told them the clutch didn't feel right and the brake light kept coming on. they told me they have not seen either issue i complained about charged me 700 dollars in labor and rental fees and sent me on my way. I then proceeded to take it to the used car dealership i bought it from and they bled the clutch and said they got alot of air out when chevy told me they didnt get any. Anyway about 3 weeks later the light was on steady and the clutch began acting funny again. I bled the clutch myself this time and didnt check the fluid level or i would have caught the next dangerous part. On the 2005 chevy aveo hatch back i have with a 1.6 5 speed shares one reservoir for brake and clutch fluid. I was driving along one day down a 12% grade about 2 mile long stretch and my brakes failed. I filled the brake fluid reservoir at first chance i got considering my arm was sore from operating the hand brake for 6 miles or so. the light went out. It will probably come back on as did mine. the leak in my system was a check valve under the brake master cylinder. be careful until you get to fixing it.
Keith, Searched the net on this, a little confusion on this one and not a lot out there. The pan/ diff. cover has to be removed or at least loosened some to change the fluid. Check the attached link, instruction and guide, Good luck

I also had that problem, at first it only came on when i accelerated, then it just stayed let. After I got my tires changed it went away. I was told it was because there was a buildup of brake dust. Take the front wheels off and rinse it down and that should take car of it.
take off the wheel there are two bolts on the end of this sliding caliper ...two bolts hold the calipers on the bracket. next you have to push the cylindar back either by clamp or open the bleeder screw half turn push the piston in . check the rubber seal . now install use black synthetic grease on two sliding pins not bolts! ...and lightly i mean lightly coat the back of the pad . this will reduce the record player effect the noise. your disc should be on a lathe or get new ones . i reccomend not pushing the piston in forcing the fluid from the caliper rushing it to the top of the brake system..
