If you look carefully at the screen, check for signs of discolouration. This could indicate a failed screen unit.

Air conditioner will not come on. The tempeture gage is reading -40. The sensor is not reading properly.

Hi ruswashingto,

The air conditioner may not work properly if your ambient temp is reading -40. The a/c control unit monitors ambient temp so that it does not operate at too low outside temps. I would recommend fixing the ambient temp sensor and rechecking your a/c operation.

I recently bought a 02 320D and the outside tempeture is reading -40 degrees.I also notice that the fan is constantly on but the tempeture gauge does not show the car as overheating....Any idea's what the...

-40 is a default # that means the temp sensor in front of the vehicle is broken out ushally or going over a curb and people pull them out and brake them then the plastic cover rubs on the wheel when driving. check the splash shields for damage i.e. plastic wheel well covers just infront of both front wheels if loose or missing the temp sensor is attached to them if missing probably will need to also do a wire repair for the conection to the sensor

I would guess the outside thermometer has lost its calibration.
Does it seem consistently 5, 10 or 20 degrees off all the time?
Let me know.

The fan could just be dead. To test the fan apply 12 volts DC directly to the correct wires of the fan. I just replaced a dead fan in a PT Criuser.
