The drivers side of the engine the front piston cylinder is number one in the firing sequence. remove the spark plug and tap the engines starter till the piston is fully up. To know when it is all the way up, use a screw driver inserted in the spark plug opening. Now that it is up remove the cap at take note when the #1 plug wire is. The rotors contact should face number one spark plug wire. All you need to do it set it correctly then set the timing at 8 degrees BTDC and it will fire up

4 brl rochester carb

Backfiring is caused by either the firing order being incorrect or the engine timing is incorrect. generally backfiring through the carburetor is caused by incorrect firing order. confirm the distributor is inserted properly and double check firing order beginning with cylinder number 1.

1984 buick regal 3.8 v6 engine won't start cranks but wont start

mcdevito75 here, under the distributor cap is a white retangle shaped ignition module it has a plug of about 4--6 wires to it that could be bad, no way to test and just the part cost $20-- $35.00 and you msay need a metric nut driver set to change it. Have your local shop do the job. If you belong to a mpotor club AAA towing may be free.

1984 buick regal "service engine soon"

you need to find someone with an old type scan tool,or one that has an adapter for the older cars to read the codes. you can also do this by jumping 2 wires on tha obd connector and count the flashes. the first suggestion is the best. get the code and get back to me and we'll go from there. hope this helps Thanks Ray
