The problem is most likely a PNP(shift position switch) problem. When this happens, the trans goes into limp home mode. The trans goes into high gear and doesn't allow any shifting up or down. This is to protect the trans.

I have a 1993 Ford F250 with a 5.8 engine and auto trans. The check engine light came on and now it has fast idle and the trans shifts really hard. What could be wrong? Thanks.

Hi, Sounds like the engine revs are to high hence you have problems with gear change adjust the engine idler to slow tickover & problem should be solved. Please give feedback at [email protected] Thanks, Malcolm Campbell.

Engine Revs at High RPMs and takes time to come back down

Do you have a check engine light on? If so you must get it tested for the fault code that is stored when the computer turns on this light.

What are the symptoms of a speed sensor going bad on a 1997 jeep grand cherokee laredo 6 cyl.

Since alot of things rely on data from the speed sensor you will "usually" get an ABS alarm, little or no shifting,no indication of speed on the speedometer, and the check engine light. without the abs light and with a speed indicated I would lean toward a transmission problem

I have a 2007 impala. The traction control light comes on. The engine slows and then the check engine light comes on. I have had the transmission worked on several times because it would slip out of...

you will need to take it to the dealer or a shop that can hook up diagnostic to it autozone and advanced auto can pull the code but thats it they can't really daignose the problem with thier code puller

Car dies and it shiftsin to gear really hard

Sounds like you have a severe vacuum leak. Poor vacuum will cause the trans to shift hard, very hard, and will also cause driveability concerns. Check all of your vacuum lines make sure they are intact, and not broken or leaking, and replace any that look questionable.

Not sure if the hubs are engaging?

Well, the best way is to place the vehicle on a hoist and raise all 4 wheels off the ground and put it in 4WD and see if all the wheels start turning.

Another way is to make a really sharp (slow) turn while the unit is in 4 wheel high or 4 wheel low on dry pavement. You should be able to feel the driveline wrap-up caused by the front wheels trying to grab during the hard turn.

4 Low should be easily distinguishable from 4 High as well as 2 Whl when you accelerate and it feels like the transmision is stuck in low gear and the engine starts screaming for mercy at high RPM and you are only doing 30 MPH.
