Alternator replaced in 2001 VW Jetta GL. Car fine until recently the engine became difficult to start. Had just shipped it Over Seas, so replaced the battery due to it's age and idle time, but diagnostics said it was fine before shipping. After replacing the battery, the Check Engine light remain lit, but car will not start w/o 34 tries, and pumping of the gas which makes the barely start up and eventually ends up in a roar of power. Will start up afterward... Until it is left to sit awhile. Was told to pump gas pedal a few times before starting as it might be fuel filter problem...
I am dumb blond in a foreign country without a clue! Help....
You car is fuel injected. You should not need to pump the gas pedal to get it to start. If your check engine light is on you need to take it to a shop and have the codes read so you can see what the problem is and repair the problem. A change of fuel filter might help. Water in your diesal fuel may also be a source of your problem. A diesal motor works off of combustion and heat, there really isnt an ignition system in the car except for the glow plugs which heat things up prior to ignition. If it is taking 34 times to start the vehicle you may also have a glow plug issue. If these are not working properly you will never get this vehicle to start.
I really think you have a glow plug problem.
It is not a glow plug issue...sounds like she has a gas engine just like mine....same make, model and year. Same exact issue. Mine has been doing it for about 2 years. I don't know what difference it really makes but I have to leave my car idle for about 30 seconds after it's in park before shutting it off and I don't have an issue starting. If I am too quick to shut it off when I park, that is when I have problems (I should say my husband causes it now since I am used to leaving it idle, anytime he drives I still have the problem). The dealership has no idea and I am tired of paying (and out of money) for nothing. If anyone knows what the problem is please post.
