The emission light and service vehicle light are on

The emission light and service vehicle light came on about 2 weeks ago, and have been coming on and off frequently. The shop wants to charge me 90 dollars just to have a diagnostic done, when i have already hooked a diagnostic machine up to it. Its the emission control sensor (fuel tank pressure sensor). Is this a big deal? Will my car just shut itself down if i don't get it fixed? Because it seems to be running fine.

No! Your car won't shut down BUT they probably won't give you an inspection sticker. Its not a big expense. Depends if they sell you the canister with the sensor or just the sensor.

2007 Hyundai Sante Fe...flashing dash indicator lights intermittently. Two nights ago service engine soon light came on. Car slowed to 20 MPH. Checked voltage of alternator and battery, both fine.

service engine soon ??? This has to do with the vehicles emissions When this light comes on it means your vehicle is polluting 1 & 1/2 times greater then the EPA allows . DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes are stored in the engine computer . The light is a warning to the driver to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop.

Service Emission System Light

#1 Always be suspicious of dealerships , they are in the business of doing repairs that are not necessarry.
#2 Loose intake hose "could" cause the problem , but only if the loose hose was after the mass air flow meter.
#3 most likely problem with your vehicle is a faulty oxygen sensor in the exhaust system , but could be as simple as a loose gas cap. Get somebody to scan the car for codes , some parts stores will do it for free. That will tell you what the error actually is.
#4 sometimes codes will reset if the problem is no longer present , sometimes not. On most vehicles , you can reset fault codes by simply disconecting the battery for a few minutes. If you do this and the light is then off , but comes on again after a few minutes , or even a few days , then there is a problem that needs to be repaired.

The check engine light comes on and off on my 06 stratus. the first time it came on was about 2 months ago. I took it to the shop and they said I had steped on the gas to hard and had forced the vacuum,...

Why my Check Engine/Service Engines Soon light comes on?
The engine computer or PCM/ECM
All modern vehicles have a computer or the ECM (Electronic Control Module) that controls the operation of the vehicle powertrain (the engine and transmission). The main purpose of this is to keep the engine running at top efficiency with the lowest possible emissions. With constantly growing demands for better fuel economy and new strictest emission regulations it's not very easy to achieve. The engine parameters need to be constantly and precisely adjusted according to various conditions such as speed, load, engine temperature, gasoline quality, ambient air temperature, road conditions, etc. That's why today's cars have much more electronics than in early days - there is a large number of various sensors and other electronic devices that help the vehicle computer or ECM to precisely control the engine and transmission operation and monitor emissions.
The vehicle computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with some of the components it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and your car needs to be looked at. To properly diagnose what is wrong, you need to take your car to a mechanic or a dealer. The technician at the dealership or a garage will then hook up the scanner to the car computer and retrieve the stored trouble code(s). Then he (she) will look it up in the service manual provided by a car manufacturer. The service manual contains the list of possible codes (about few hundreds) and describes what each code means and what needs to be tested. The code itself doesn't tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, what engine parameter is out of normal range. The technician will have to perform further testing to pinpoint a defective part.

2006 check engine light came on and RPM slowed to 2000

Not the fuel filter, this is an emissions problem. Sounds like it is in Limp Mode. You need to have the ECU scanned for trouble codes. Is this vehicle not still under warranty for the emissions system? Call your Dodge dealer and find out.

VW Passat 2001: Exhaust emission warning lamp flashing. Manual says 'blinks if the catalyst can be damaged by misfires'. Any suggestions?

"Check engine light" EMISSIONS WORKSHOP! Do you want to shut it off??? After reading all of the negative comments and how much money Passat owners have spent due to this manufacturer's problem, I am going to save the day and save you $$$ by showing you how to "reset" the diagnostic computer which makes the "emissions workshop-check engine light come on! (This is the same thing the VW dealer will charge you hundreds of dollars to do.) To turn off the "Check Engine" (Emissions Workshop) light, simply follow these 5 basic steps:
1. Pop open the hood.
2. Insert the key in the ignition and turn without starting the engine until all of the dash indicators light and warning tones sound.
3. With the key still in the ignition, use a 10mm wrench or socket to loosen and completely disconnect the negative (-) battery cable from the battery. Wait about 60 seconds before reconnecting.
4. Re-connect and tighten the negative (-) cable to the battery and close the hood.
5. Start the engine. THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT HAS GONE OUT!
If the light stays on, then there really is a problem. If it has turned off, be glad, but don't be surprised to see it come on again in a few weeks. If it comes on again, simply follow steps 1-5. Remember... This quick repair is for those who just can't stand looking at this light or afford to visit VW every time this light comes on. If you feel the need to service the vehicle, service the vehicle. I hope this has made your "NIGHTMARE" a little easier!!!
