Could you just clarify weather the engine is just not turning over or it won't fire up and run? If your having to tap the starter to try and get the starter to operate then you have a problem with the starter motor and will need to get it replaced or rebuilt which ever is the cheapest. It could be a number of reason's why the engine won't run these are the main reasons:
Not enough fuel No spark getting to the spark plugs Not getting enough air Or the engine may not be turning over fast enough, caused by flat battery or faulty starter motor.Hope this helps, let me know how you get on. The click you are hearing is most likely the start slenoid making contact, however you should short the large wires @ the solenoid to make certain the starter still doesn't run, if so try tapping the starter with a hammer to shift the comutator a litle and try to start. Even if it now starts the starter will continue to give you problems so the proper fix is change the starter
fuses - including the eingine fuse itself,. otherwise you may want to tap on the starter while someone trys to turn it over,. otherwise remove, test (if good) replace starter) was the starter solenoid replaced with the starter? are all the connections including the battery ground cleaned/ inspected? You may have a bad starter or bad solenoid, even new (rebuilt) that can happen.. best regards Ck
May be a starter motor brush fault since if warn out motor will not even click if it is that if you tap the side of the starter it will start for a while but you will need to replace them
Sounds like stuck starter moter solenoid. Get a mate to tap the solenoid (smaller cylinder attached to the starter motor side) with a hammer, quite hard, while you repeatedly turn the start key on & off. If no joy (and this is needed anyway) have starter removed and reconditioned.
Try having one person turn the key to the start position and hold it there, while someone else taps on the starter with a hammer. If tapping on it makes it work, you need a starter. Good luck. Hope this helps.
all I had to do on a sable was to replace the belt but look at the battery there should be a wire coming from the battery going to another solenoid mounted under the hood and then going down to the starter get a 12 volt tester and see if you have power going to this solenoid cause it could be dead on one end and not going down to the starter
