The steering column has universal joints in it and one might be worn out but that is unlikely. There is a spring loaded into the horn button that slides when you turn the wheel to allow it to remain in contact with a conducting plate. Something is probably wrong there and it's making a clicking noise. If you don't have an airbag then I suggest taking off the cover in the center of the wheel, removing the steering wheel bolt and looking under at horn mechnism to see if something is wrong, and while your at it look at the u-joints and make sure the wheel is not catching. Also, your flasher mechanism could be catching as well, like when you turn on your flasher and then turn the wheel, it pops back right... well that could also be a likely culprt. If you have an air-bag, take it to a garage, air-bags can kill if set off by accident. You can unscrew the plastic around the steering wheel and everything will be exposed and turn the wheel and this will allow you to locate the noise precisely. Again, if you have an air-bag take it to a pro, not worth the risk.

Where does the sound come from at the steering wheel or down inside the car.

Testimonial: "Thank you i will try that"

Ok, Behind the Steering wheel is a device called a clock spring, this has two functions, it contains a ribbon wire which allows you to turn the wheel without snapping the wires that controls the Airbag and the horn, plus any other switches that maybe connected to your steering wheel. Secondly it cancels the indicators when you turn the wheel. disconnect the battery and then remove the centre of the steering wheel to get to the main bolt, disconnect the wires and remove the steering wheel. You will now be able to access the clock spring, turn the clock spring left or right no more than one turn and you should be able to see what is making the noise. Replace the broken part and install the steering wheel. WARNING Remember that removing the air bag should not be done with the battery connected as it can cause a deployment of the system. It should be done by a dealer. I hope this helps.

The steering wheel makes a clicking sound but not that loud when driving straight or when making a turn. Is that mean the rack and pinion of my car are bad?

Take it back to the dealer. The problem could be a Constant Velocity Joint wearing out.
Replacing the rack and pinion is an exceedingly expensive repair. Replacing a CV joint or axle is significantly less expensive.
It sounds as if your dealer is honest.

My 1996 nissan altima makes a clicking sound when i turn the steering wheel

Back and forth, Inner or outer tie rod ends. Don't rule out lower ball joints. A constant click turn all the way left or right, Steering linkage.

Replace rack pinion

He is probably telling you the truth as most cars have around 4 turns lock to lock. The clicking sound you are hearing is the turn indicator switch under the wheel clicking as you go past the fingers that activate the lever to off position. The only thing I would check first is that the steering shaft coupling onto the pinion shaft is tight and the clamp bolt is still there. Otherwise it will be a new/reconditioned rack and pinion box

I have a 2006 pontiac pursuit (g5) and when you turn the steering wheel past center from either direction the steering wheel makes a clicking sound that is loud enough to hear any where in the car. It does...

iF YOUR PONTIAC HAS ELECTRIC OR ELECTRIC ASSIST STEERING, THEN IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE MISSING TEETH/DAMAGED GEAR INSIDE THE ELECTRICAL STEERING ASSEMBLY. THIS WOULD CAUSE THE NOISE AND THE OFF CENTER STEERING CONCERN.

I have 2004 lexus es330, i been feeling a click on my steering wheel when i turn left or right. i feel or hear a clicking noise( when the car is on motion). What could cause this problem? i have almost...

it sounds like the car is a front wheel drive??
then the noise will be the CV (CONSTANT VELOCITY) joints in the front end.
these drive the wheels from the transmission but are a big swivel joint that allows the axle to turn when you turn the wheels
these have ball bearings in them and are full of special grease
they are worn out when they make a very loud clicking noise (LOUDER WHEN YOU TURN A CORNER UNDER POWER)
THEY HAVE A RUBBER BOOT AROUND THEM THAT STOPS THE GREASE COMING OUT AND THE DIRT AND GRIME GETTING IN.
if the rubber boots become perished and crack the grease comes out and the dirt and water (rain) gets in

Toyota Corolla, manual 1991, Squeaking sound when turn the steeri

This is normal for a 210K Toyota Corolla. What you are hearing is the sound made by the power steering pump. Check fluid level and fill as needed. Some noise in the instances you are mentioning is normal.

Clicking/Squealing When Turning Wheel

Could be two problems. First the power steering; Check the tension of the drive belt for the power steering and the condition of the belt. If that appears to be OK, check the level of the fluid and its condition or apperance compared to new fluid that is recomended by the manufacturer. If that appears OK, it could possibly be the power steering pump it self. Second the clicking; It is most likely a bad CV (constant velocity) axle. Good Luck.

Loud clicking noise when 4wd is engaged on left wheel when turnin

Check your cv (constant velocity joint) , It may have a big clearance which is the source of the noise when turning left or right and when 4wd is engage. Juts like front wheel drive cars, if the cv joint is with clearance it will tend to sound in the left or right turns. It is not exactly clicking sound , nmore like knocking sound , low in pitch, but not heavy.

Engine died and turns over when moving steering wheel left and right

it sounds like your ignition switch is failing and when you turn the wheel sometimes the steering lock pin is jolting the switch and making a momentary contact, you should try turning the key to the on position and jumping a 12 volt signal wire from the battery to the small wire on the starter (only until it starts do not leave this connected constantly) to confirm this is the switch for sure check for 12 volts out of the switch in the start position (it may be intermittent also) good luck and please rate -jeff here is your part click here 2ea336d.jpeg
