Click here.Most manufacturers nowadays have tied their radios to both the serial number and the VIN (vehicle identification or chassis no.) of the car they are in. This makes decoding more difficult and of course improves security. However as the legal owner of the radio it also means you are tied in to Rip Off dealership charges!
Ford however is an exception to this rule in radios up to year 2007. The absolute majority of these Ford Radios can be decoded by serial number alone and this removes the difficulty and requirement for dealership help.
First you will need to remove the radio from the dash and you will find the serial number on a sticker on the case. This begins with a letter which is followed by 6 numbers..
Example M123456 for M series radios
or A123456 for A series radios.
Only later Ford Radios (from around 2007) with a V prefix cannot be decoded via this method and the Ford dealership must be used for these at a much higher cost as stated.
All other serials with A,C,L or the most common M letter prefix can be decoded cheaply as outlined.
