Check if you have spark (coil or ignition problem) Next consider what you did when rebuilding the TBI as there may be parts that will only operate in one way or settings that have to be adjusted. Lastly is the new ECM compatible with the system (immobiliser) Use a scanner to reset the ecm program
fuses are always first.
you said no power to the coil that means 12vdc power.
so hows car run with no power to coil no electric power?
ok, seems its , running good, then you lose engine power (not usage of word engine) then you find loss of 12vdc power to the ignition coil
you blew a fuse.
1987, carb engine
no engine stated, making any spark help near impossible
2.5L Vin H, TBI injection
4.2.L Vin C, 2bbl carb.
apples and oranges different (huge difference)
the 4.2 liter gets power from a ballast resistor.
on the yellow wire . the igntion switch feeds the this resistor
the green wire, goes to the ignition module.
this wire reads 12v key on, then when cranked, or running
the module grounds the green wire for about 5/1000s of second
and then release this ground making Inductive spark (Tesla action)
. that is how the 4.2 works.
Visual inspection to confirm dist rotor is turning. Check pick up coil under rotor, 2 small wires, green and white tend to break, pull on them slightly to check. The rotor can burn thru and short to ground. try these.
if it has a distributor then the button could be bad. if so then you would want to replace the cap and all. if that dont work you may want to check your plugs or wires. i have actually bought wires that didnt work. they looked perfect but the wire wasnt connected to the end. it just pulled out of the plug part that goes on the spark plug.
tach hook up for chevy with hei distribitor is 1)white wire ; 12volt source 2)red wire -12 volt ignition switch (+) 3)black wire -battery ground (-) green wire ; to tach terminal on dist. / if it not hei with points just put green wire to neg. (-) side of coil
use a voltmeter, connect the black lead to the ground, then probe each one with the red lead. The one that gives you the 12V reading is the positive. Thats the surest way to find out.
