Your steering did NOT seize. Power steering is run from a belt. If the belt breaks and the belt powers the pump and the alternator, you lose power steering and the battery light comes on. You still had steering. What you lost was power assist. You can still turn the wheels, it's just much harder to turn. Get the belt replaced and you should be back in business.
sounds like your fan belt is slipping ! hence that why the battery light comes on because alternator isnt turning or turning slowly and your power steering pump wont be turning also ,,,making steering difficult ! fan belts can be adjusted at the alternator i think thanks :)
It sounds more like your alternator is bad. The basics boil down to this: Your battery when fully charged is used to start your car and support your electrical needs as driving (lights, power windows, etc..) After starting your car the battery loses a little of it's charge and the alternator recharges battery as well as providing power for your ignition, electrical accessories. If the alternator goes bad or is weak, then you rely on more battery power which in-turn drags battery down until it no longer can start your car.
With this said, you can have any good parts store test both your starter and alternator and MOST will do it for free.
Here is a list of things to check:1) A stuck wastegate actuator,2) a leak in exhaust system, 3)a binding or dragging rotating assembly,4) a leaking diaphram or vacuum hose.
The bearings in these goes due to heat make sure lubrication is clean and circulating.
SOUND LIKE AC COMPRESSOR SEIZING OR LOCKING UP PUTTING DRAG ON DRIVE BELT SLOWING DOWN POWER STEERING PUMP AND ALTERNATOR.THATS WHY BATTERY LIGHT COMING ON.
i had a similiar problem on my MK3, which turned out to be a seized alternator, and was quite easy to replace. however it may be something simpler, as the power steering motor is driven of the same wheel as the alternator on the drivers side of the engine, and that might be seized causing both of your problems as neither are being powered. i would check the belts and wheels first then if thier okay start focusing on your alternator.
Check the voltage when revin the enine if it goes over 14v than regler (part of the alternator wich regulate the voltage) on alternator isn't working properly and that can make all those problems.
