Check the bulbs first. If those are good check the brake light fuse. If that is good find the brake light switch under the drivers side of the dash. One wire should have power all the time. There should be a wire that gets power whe you push down on the pedal. If this doesn't happen replace the brake switch.
Yes the brake light switch operated when close to the brake light switch. If you replace it and it doesnt remedy you need to check the pigtail of the lamp and see if power is there whe the brake switch is in the closed position(stepping on the brake pedal) If you are equipt with a brake light module failure you will need to bypass this module
The break light coming on is PROBABLY low brake fluid. When you take off, the fluid moves and the little switch is making. I wish I could help you with the meters on the dash but I am stupid when it comes to that stuff.
Checking the brake fluid is easy, and most gas stations have a can of fluid for a few bucks. If you are thrifty then walmart or kmart generally has it cheaper.
check fuses for brake system.also check brake switch under dash behind brake pedal. disconnect plug from brake switch and use a jumper wire to jump across plug to activate brake lights. if your brake lights come on remove switch and install new switch. hope this will help.
the break light wire on the lumina runs through the blinker switch or multifunction switch on the colum.. check there as well as at the tail light sockets. on the late 90s gm cars the sockets had a tendancy to rot away... use a test light at the brake light wire in the trunk and have a friend apply the break. if there is power then may have to get new tail lights. or replacement bulbs.
