For an automatic transmission you'll have to get a small funnel and add it through the dipstick tube where it's checked from. If you have difficulty doing it, most service station attendants are capable of doing it and you can watch them for future reference. But the dipstick tube is the only way.

We think 1998 cavalier is low on transmission fluid because of the way the car is acting. how do we even check the trani fluid it has that red plug under the hood and is hard to get to.

You can fill it from there with the engine off access and remove plug you will need a transmission funnel, start the vehicle and add half quart transmission fluid (dextron III) as you remove the funnel you should see fluid at the far bottom just dont fill it to the top just add some if you over fill it it will spew out so a little at a time cansmo_177.gif

Where do I check the transmission fluid

Hi, follow the detailed instruction below on how to check the Transmission fluid on your Chevy Cavalier 2001.
  1. Turn the Cavalier on and put it in neutral. Make sure your hand brake is engaged to keep the car from moving while you work on it. Open your car's hood so that you have access to the engine.
  2. Look for your Cavalier's transmission dipstick. It should stick out from the body of the engine, and be clearly labelled as "transmission fluid." Refer to your Cavalier's owner's manual for a diagram of engine parts if you have trouble locating the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out and clean it off with a rag. Reinsert the dipstick and pull it out again. Check the end of the dipstick for your reading; the transmission level will be measured on the dipstick by labels like "low," "medium" and "high." If your dipstick has no fluid on it, it means that your Cavalier is almost out of transmission fluid and needs more. A low reading also indicates a need to add more fluid. If the fluid is low, add a bottle of transmission fluid, available for purchase at auto supply shops. Add fluid and repeat this process until your dipstick shows a reading of "high" or "full."

I have a 2004 chevrolet cavalier and when i shift from park it slams into gear and sometimes when i am driving i try to give it more gas and it will start dying down and the rpm meter will go back and...

Your car may need transmission fluid. Generally when there is a hard shift in gear, the transmission fluid is low. You may need to add a little transmission fluid.

WHERE IS THE TRANSMISSION DIP STICK ON 1998 CAVALIER

I believe that one does not have a dipstick. You need to check the fluid by removing the fill plug located under the car on the passenger side of the transmission between the transmission pan and the oil pan. It will be a small brass colored plug.

The fill plug is on top of the transmission about in the center near where the transmission bolts to the engine. It will be red and look like a small oil cap.

The vehicle needs to be level and running in order to check the fluid level. The exhaust pipe is right there also so you'll have to be careful not to burn yourself while you are checking.. If you have the front jacked up and not the rear the level will be off.

The vehicle needs to be running before you pull the level plug on the underside of the transmission.

Once the vehicle is level, running, and up to temp pull the plug. make sure you have a drain pain under the car to catch any fluid that may come out. If a little fluid comes out than it is full. If no fluid comes out you'll have to add some through the fill plug on top of the transmission. Remove the fill cap and add fluid until it starts to come out of the hole. Reinstall the plug. Your good to go!
