My ford escort hesitates and shakes like its about to stall whenever I come to a stop or right before I come to a stop. Is it the fuel line?

run fault codes to find the faulty cylinders. With the fault codes You can get a list of possible things that can be checked and replaced.

Have you replaced the engine oil recently? If so, then the problem should be somewhere in the fuel supply (fuel filter, injectors) or the exhaust system (o2 sensor).

The Ford Escort ZX2, the 2.0 liter is a interference engine,The valve and the piston kissed each other as they met with a broken timing belt,Just to let you know a cam position sensor does not create rough idle, it can stall the engine at a stop sign,but the solution is a valve job, and who ever put the timing belt on after the job should have done a cylinder effeciency test.

maybe the bulkhead to the computer is loose or needs to be unplugged and then plugged back in. make sure that it is moisture free, unhook the battery before unplugging and plugging the computer.. ;)

I don't have the solution, but I have the same exact problem on my 1991 Escort 1.9L with auto with 120K miles. I replaced the IAC with no difference. In fact I unplugged it, and still had the random stalling. Also disconnected the EGR vacuum line...still stalled randomly. After it stalls it always starts right back up again. Sometimes it will act as if it's going to stall, but comes back to normal idle. Park or Drive makes no difference. Acceleration and all normal driving is fine. The next thing I was going to try is hooking up a timing light and watch to see if the timing light stops flashing as it's stalling, and/or hooking up a fuel pressure gauge somehow, to the fuel rail, to see if the pressure drops when stalling....to figure out if its ignition or fuel related.

check the trans kick down sensor

The CAMshaft position sensor is faulty.

check fuel pressure regulator.+ vacuum lines going to it look see if gas in vacuum line.if so regulator rupture.

the stalling prob when u come to a stop might be ur torque convertor there a wiring plug for it on the transmission unplug it see if thats helps

Sounds like a weak battery, have the battery tested, if it gives out a low voltage or other faulty behaviour the computer will not run right, making the guages mess up and the engine run badly. Replace it if it is "weak" when tested. should solve your problem!
