'91 Honda CRX with fluctuating tach and cutout prob

I have a '91 Honda CRX and the tach starts to fluctuate close to 60 mph. It will waver between 3000 and redline. Also, when it gets above 60 sometimes it wants to cut out sometimes. The main relay, distributor, and alternator have all been changed within the last 5 years. Started this tach problem shortly after half-shafts were replaced. Same mechanic replaced the timing belt.
Would really appreciate some help on this. Has had a complete electrical check too. Get a CEL at times. Sometimes going up steep hills. Codes are 1 & 20, oxygen sensor and electric load detector. The last code(load detector) may go away with the recent replacement of the alt.
Thanks

Problem fixed--bad distributor

Update--I still have this problem with my CR; It only went away temporarily with the change of the distributor. No mechanic has been able to diagnose what it is. It wouldn't surprise me if it was related to all the cell phone and microwave signals shooting around. I get a check engine light coming on when I pass certain spots in town as well as the tach fluctation near 60 mph on the highway. Seems to all be related to electrical anomalies. I've also changed the ECM.

The tach fluctuation problem turned out to be bad main ground wires.

Agreed it should be the distriubutor, however, if it has a VTEC engine, it can be remedied by changing the VSS sensor (vehicle speed sensor). This is located on the back of the dash dials, but it is an annoying job to do, best bet is get a new set from eBay.

91 civic 5spd doesnt have any power when i step on the padal it takes a few min. to get to 60 mph and struggles a lot

I had a '90 CRX myself for many years. Loved that car. A simple tune-up brought a lot of power back to it, as did new spark plug wires and a new ignition coil.

One thing I found out was that those Honda engines really need the backpressure from their exhaust systems in order to run correctly. If you're running on your original muffler/header, etc, it's probably time to replace all that stuff.

You'll also want to check your compression in your cylinders. A car that old (20 years! congrats!) might have some cracks in the head gasket.

My 2004 Odyssey at 1000 to 1500 rpm will growl and the tach will fluctuate quickly. If we raise the rpm at higher speeds it does not happen. Local dealer cannot resolve the issue...its driving us...

Try replacing TPS (Throttle Positioning Switch) These are basically a rheostat and after time they develop a wear/hot spot - usually right around highway cruising position. When they develop a hot spot you get hesitations and RPM fluctuations

I have a 91 honda crx dx model..i was sriving down the freeway and the engine stopped..i had full power lights and all and the car wouldnt start again for about 10 minutes then it finally started

Main relay has dry joints. Remove it, from under the coin tray in between door and steering wheel under dash. Resolder the join and refit. You don't need a new one, just the joints are dry.

Very common and gives you the willies when it kills you car on the freeway.

Vote for me if this helps you.

I have a 1991 honda crx 1.5 ex and was diving on the interstate at around 60 mph and then it started backfiring and loosing power. I pulled and shut it down then tried to start it again and it will turn...

Normally this sort of scenario indicates a sticking or broken EGR valve and/or a serious vacuum leak. Either of these will cause the problem you described.

Hope this helps you....

Temperature fluctuating. water seems to dissappear. Is it the head or the thermostat Thank you

when you say water dissappears do you mean all of the water or some? pull your oil dipstick and see if it is oil, or is it coffee cream color? if the latter than you have a blown head gasket, if you have someone that can change the head gasket good if not than take it to a mechanic.
