It is located on the inside of the frame rail just about where the drivers seat is located, u will need a Ford fuel line release tool to change it, the filter is held in a metal braket with one 8mm bolt to remove it, keep rags around the line with u take it off, there will be pressure present in the line, the little tools u need are avail from NAPA or Carquest or Autozone, about $5

Need to find location of fuel filter for 2002 Ford Explorer 4D, 4WD, 4.61 litre V8, XLT

Instructions Things You'll Need:
  • Quick release tool (Avail from most Napa auto parts stores)
  • Eye protection
  1. Step 1 Ensure your vehicle has had time to cool down since the last time it was driven. The engine block should be cool to the touch.
  2. Step 2 Remove the gas cap from your Ford Explorer and locate the Schrader valve attached to the vehicle's fuel line.
  3. Step 3 Don eye protection and depress the Schrader valve until no more gas and air comes out.
  4. Step 4 Locate the fuel filter. Your fuel filter will be located underneath the edge of the vehicle on the driver's side. There may be a plastic cover covering the filter. If so, unbolt it and remove it.
  5. Step 5 Take the safety clips off of the ends of the filter. Then, use a "quick release" tool to remove the fuel lines that are attached to the filter.
  6. Step 6 Connect your new filter to the fuel lines using the quick release tool to clamp the lines to each end of the filter.
  7. Step 7 Reinstall the safety clips on the new fuel filter by clamping them on each end of the filter.
  8. Step 8 Start your Ford Explorer and run at idle for five minutes. Visually verify underneath the body of the vehicle that there are no leaks from the fuel filter
