You might need to simply disconnect the battery for 10 mins and do the usual like set the clock etc afterwards but although the ecu will have stored the code it should start from scratch, first doing a TBA (throttle body alignment) - lots of whirring and clicking, when thats stopped (ign on after reconnecting battery, dont start engine just ign on) the engine will be ready to start and hopefully since all is well the CEL(check engine light) should not come on. At worst, see if someone local has vag com or a hand-held OBD device that can reset the CEL and if it just comes back on, the fault is solid.

Did you mean you connected the original maf back up or a new one? If its the original and the light only appeared after disconnecting it, then the ecu mustnt have realised it was faulty, and only noticed when you pulled the plug, a reset should clear it no problem, but has you original fault returned after putting the maf back on or has it now gone away? Might have been a bad/dirty connection now made good, or if youve cleaned it, and its working fine, the CEL will be a dummy from the time it was removed so reset & your good to go!
many a times while replacing the maf the wires beside the sensor gets disconnected or loose and this makes the problem.so check out the wirings. This will help. Thanks please keep updated. please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

There is no setting for the MAF, the MAF reads the reads the quantity of air entering the engine, this reading is constantly varing with the throttle position and the density of the air, the resding that the computer sees is from 1.00 volt to about 4.75 volts, 4.75 volts would be wide open throttle, one volt closed throttle, this is called the MAF signal.

1999 passat check engine light on and low idle

Best bet is to plug it into a code reader to see what the computer believes the problem to be. Only takes a few seconds and should be next to nothing in cost. Best guess is that the front O2 sensor in your air intake needs replacement. Other possibilities are clogged fuel filter or even worn out spark plugs. Need that code number to pin it down accurately.

What is a maf sensor

Hi Sarah:The main purpose of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor is to measure the volume and density of air entering the engine at any given time. The computer uses this information in conjunction with input from other sensors, to calculate the correct amount of fuel to deliver to the engine.

Hope this helps.

My truck is showing codes 171 and 174. Can you help

P0174 Generic Definition

Fuel Trim Bank Two Condition
- The ECM has detected a rich or lean air/fuel ratio condition on engine bank two

Probable Cause[s]

  1. If bank one and two are set together suspect a fuel pressure condition or MAF sensor fault
  2. Failed HO2S21
  3. Ignition misfire condition
  4. Fuel injector problem
  5. Engine mechanical condition

    P0171 Generic Definition

    Fuel trim bank one condition
    - The powertrain control module uses the oxygen sensor to calculate the air/fuel ratio of the engine. The computer has recognized a rich or lean condition on one engine bank only.

    Probable Cause[s]

    1. If bank one and two codes set together suspect fuel pressure or MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor
    2. Oxygen sensor defective
    3. Ignition misfire-repair
    4. Fuel injector problem

      REPLACING mass air flow sensor

The mass flow sensor on the 1999 intrigue is along the intake tube right after the air filter intake housing. Loosen the two clamps that hold the MAF sensor between the Air filter box cover and air intake tube, disconnect the wire leads at the MAF sensor connection and remove the MAF. Note it's uncommon for the MAF sensor to go bad and 95% of the time, cleaning it with MAF sensor with MAF cleaner will fix any problem it may of had to trigger the DTC codes.
Start with trying to clean it first just by following the instruction on the MAF cleaner. This should save you time and money to get your Intrigue running 100% again soon.
Good luck and thank you for using Fixya.

97 cabrio 2.0 aba engine with 5speed. Starts

the sensor that controls the mixture is the heated oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold before the cat converter
if that is the one you disconnected and it made no difference then logically if it was working ok then there would have been a difference
replace it and see if there is a difference

I have a 1997 chevy silverado putting out a code of p0174 what does this mean?

Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 2 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 2 is generally the side of the engine that doesn't have cylinder #1.

A code P0174 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

•The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters can cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry.
•There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.

      Possible solutions include:

•In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for its location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling
•Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary
•Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure

      VW CODES

Those codes mean there's an issue with your MAF, Throttle Body Sensor, Fuel System, Engine Misfires

Start with the MAF first as that can cause the other issues to appear (ex. fuel issue because your MAF says it needs more fuel so your engine is getting flooded and stalling.

Then look at the Throttle body and have the replaced if the issue still occurs... Then look at the fuel injectors and fuel delivery system (lines, gas tank, gas pump, etc)

Your engine misfires seem to be the result of any of the previous....
