Not much left unchanged is there and no doubt you have done compression testing on all 4 cylinders as well. (If not you need to). I assume it is cranking over normally with the starter motor but not firing.
I would try one of the Porsche Owners Forums for this as one of the other 944 owners there should be able to help..... Like this one..................
It is not hard to change. They are usually located on the bottom back of the engine. I have had cars that didn't spark and the crank solved everything. Others, it didn't work. Don't know why, guess it all depends on the computer reading it all. Your ECM controls all the ignition comonents and timing. Have you tried putting in another? Sometimes, if it doesn't read the crank, it will shut down the spark. Some do, some don't. Can't be 100% sure but it has worked before. I usually tell people to go to a junkyard when they have no spark and have been trying to fix it for some time. Get all the parts you need for cheap. A bad cam sensor can cause no spark and the distributor itself.
Only thing I can think off if you getting fuel and sparks, two thing need for engine to run my guess is the timing is off. adjust the the rotor by turning it small turn forward to backward, if that don't work than more likely it completely out of time, either the chain has stretch so far and jump time completely. have a compression test done also making sure you have good compression.
You will not be able to hear the fuel pump on that model. First you have to determine if you get fuel and have spark. If it is a fuel problem, replace the DME relay first. Very common. They act up and fail without warning. Part is cheap and located in the fuse box. Next would be the fuel pump. If it is spark related it may be the Flywheel Reference Sensors. There are two and the cost about $100 each.
