Does you engine temp gauge register normal operating temp when the engine has ran for 10- 15 minutes? If so, your problem could be your heater control valve. If your engine temp is cold, then your problem is most likely your thermostat. Pls advise further what is going on.
The cooling fans work with a sensor. It has to reach a certain temperature in order for it to work. Maybe it is not the fan. Fan not coming is definitely caused by a faulty thermostat.
If you haven't replaced your water pump, chances are it could be the
original part (OEM). This use a composite material impeller similar to
hard plastic. They are prone to cracking at the shaft connection for
the pulley and doesn't spin with the engine. Replace it with an
aftermarket part which have metal impellers. I'd advice to invest on
replacing your timing belt at this time because the water pump is
behind the belt. Also keep in mind to use G12 only coolant (VW red
coolant), these are phosphate free keeping the system cleaner. Your A/C when switched on automatically activates the fan to lower engine temp when the compressor adds extra loads to the engine.
does it sound like there is any compression. remove cover on the right side that covers t-belt see if belt might have broken. if cooling system failed could have blow fuse for cooling fans. causing overheating.
There should be a diagram in your Owner's Manual. I have one for my daughter's 1998 Beetle that should be the same as in the 2000 Beetle. Can email it to you if you post an email address that I can send it to.
Had the same issue. I replaced one of the fuses in the little case on top of the engine. Check the fuse diagram in the manual, locate the one for a/c. The fuses are color coded by amps, just buy the right color and push into place. (I did this after verifying my coolant levels were normal)
THIS FAN COULD BE FOR THE AIR CONDITIONER AND MAY ONLY RUN WHEN THE A/C IS ON. TRY TURNING THE A/C ON AND SEE IF THE ONE THAT YOU REPLACED TURNS. HOPE THIS HELPS. GOOD LUCK
In the fan circuit...You have a temp switch screwed on the radiator, a fuze and a relay in the fuze box plus a fan. Swap the relay with another relay, replace the fuze. The other fan should come on when the a/c is turned on. If you fix the fans and it still overheats, you may have a BLOWN HEAD GASKET. ALSO ARE YOU BLEEDING THE AIR FROM THE SYSTEM? DO YOU SMELL EXHAUST IN THE COOLANT?
