If the sputter got real bad, I could smell what smelled like weed eater gas inside the cabin. As you could also imagine, there is a loss of power.

if the fuel level sensor is not showing correct level when the level shifts from and level surface to an angled surface the fuel will flow away from pump intake and can cause this. what is like with a 1/2 tank of gas, does the problem go away. if so then this is the problem.

It surely could be. Ignition/electrical will just die. Fuel will cough and sputter.

Check the fuel filter or do back pressure test on catalyst converters.

Or maybe mass air flow sensor or restricted air filter

You have a bad coil, most likely. Check the catalytic converter also at a shop. Possibly bad spark wire(s). Last but not likely, a prob with the PCM .

this is back fire, but to intake side or exhaust.?
intake side is bad spark timing.
exh side is gross over fueling and cracks in the exhaust pipe,
causing what is called, muffler explosions... loud report
the intake pops are back fires and is a not so loud , cough. sound.

does it run bad, cold , hot engine or both?
does the engine run bad, even raced, in neutral , or cold.?
does the engine misfire at any time. say when?
does the engine bog, (lost power up hills or any time)? explain when.?

The easiest way to figure this out is to read the touble code that triggered the check engine light.You will probably want to clear the code after making the correction,otherwise,it colud take a lot of ignition cycles to go out on its own.A basic code scanner is about 50 bucks,which will pay for itself in one use! The battery fire probably melted a nearby wire,connector,or sensor.

It's a sensor crazy world, but i'm guessing your problem is caused by something more simple. Spark plug wires, or a partially clogged fuel filter. If that doesn't solve it, check the EGR, and check for vacuum leaks . Broken , cracked or loose vacuum lines.
