I had the same problem after someone tried to steal my 2000 Dodge Ram truck. I replaced the ignition switch and key tumbler, after that, when I turned the key, the key in ignition chime came on, but when I turned the key, it wouldn't crank, turned out to be the 50amp run fuse under the hood, replaced thar, started right up! But then had the abs and airbag lights on, no speedometer, and no power windows or blower motor! Traced that to the 30amp ign/run fuse under the hood. Didn't look bad, but when I took the little plastic cover off the fuse, I could see the hairline break in the link! Replaced that, and now I'm back to normal! Hope this helps someone out there!
Air bag systems are intricate and should definately be looked at by a professional. You could be in for a very bad day if you try to diagnose the problem yourself.
The short answer is no. The air-bag warning light came on. Something has gone wrong and warrants a look to see what has happened. You would need to buy a special scan-tool to look at the live data, at stored codes, and after the repair is done, then reset the air-bag system. Please don't tamper with the yellow connectors unless you know what to do. Static charge can set off an air-bag.
this is because of the multi function switch "aka turn signal switch" it is a very very very common problem with these model trucks. What you have to do it replace the multifunction switch by removing the air bag, pulling the sterring wheel and then removing the clockspring behind that is the mulitfunction switch which just un screws. Everybody freaks out about removing the air bag but as long as you disconnect both negative battery terminals " if you have a diesel" you are perfect the air bag has two 10m bolts behind the steering wheel and it will pretty much fall in your lap. then un plug the two wire connection and the horn connection. The hanes manuel helps alot for pictures but it is kinda vage in some areas but with a little common since any joe smoe can do it.
The ABS stands for (Anti-Lock Brake System). The air bag light or SRS stands for (Supplemental Restraint System). The lights are staying on because there is a problem with both systems. They have nothing in common with each other. I suggest you have this looked at by a professional. Working on the SRS can be hazardous so leave that to a pro.
the impacts sensors are located on the front near the fenders.
messing with an airbag system is dangerous.
leave it to a qualified technician.there are many other components other than the sensors.
It sounds like the clockspring is defective. It should have a stored code in the airbag module for "drivers squib circuit open". A new clockspring should take care of it. Disconnect the battery, remove the steering wheel and the upper and lower column shouds to gain access. After reassembly, turn the key on first before reconnecting the battery. That way if something went wrong with the repair and the airbag accidently deploys, you will be outside the vehicle safe from injury. I hope this helps.
