You are talking about two completely different systems. The back-up lights are switched on by placing the transmission in reverse. The brake and turn signal lights are switched on by switches in the steering column and the brake system. The most common problem would be blown bulbs. Remove the lenses and replace the bulbs (they are cheap) and see if that works. If not check the wiring and the switch or get someone to do it.
Hi - sorry your having problems with your back up lights.
Let's do a quick check and simple first.
1 - remove the bulbs to see if they are burnt out- YES on occasion both will be out at the same time because one out isn't always noticed.
2- once we establish the bulbs are good - check your fuses. In the owners manual they will be labeled or on the fuse box cover. Some fuses are under the dash and some are under the hood and sometimes these must both be checked.
3 if the fuses are good you will need to check the adjustment at the shift lever/ transmission.
There is a switch that makes a connections and 'grounds' the wire making the lights light up. This must be checked for power with the car in reverse and jacked up and carefully put on jack stands. Many major injuries happen during this procedure so just be extra careful and it is best to have someone with you.
Be sure to check back if my suggestions don't cure the problem.
