Car smells like gas even though I have watched for
Car smells like gas (when windows are down) even though I have watched for leaks and have found none. Also made sure there was no spillage when I pumped. Is this a fuel pump going out on my 1995 toyota camry?
Re: Car smells like gas even though I have watched for
NO. It may have to do with the vapor return ,cc perg..if smell is coming from under hood it could be a small leak at the injector.that drys up {caution any fuel leak or smell can cause fire..}

Check all gas lines from your gas tank to the carburetor and see if there are damp spots and if you see any damp spots take your finger and wipe the damp spot and smell. If it smells like gas there probably is a slight leak. even a moist spot of gas will smell big time.
Check all around your gas tank as well. A question i have do you have a clean air filter. If not it might be choking itself to *****.
IT IS LOOKS LIKE A FUEL PRESSURE LEAKING INSIDE THE ENGINE OR DEFECTIVE FUEL INJECTOR LEAKING . TRY DISCONNECTING THE FUEL PUMP RELAY. AND CRANK THE ENGINE IF ALWAYS CRANK WITH OUT OF FUEL (CRANK WITHOUT START) YOU HAVE FUEL LEAK INSIDE THE ENGINE
REMOVE THE INJECTORS RAIL UP EVERYTHING CONNECTED,PUT BACK THE FUEL PUMP RELAY TURN THE SWITCH ON AND FIND WICH ONE IS LEAKING. (GASOLINE IS FLAMMABLE TAKE CARE)
Sean, the only suggestion I can give in this case is. It sounds like it may be flooding out. This could be because of leaking injectors. What happens is when you turn the engine off the injector will continue to leak into the cylinder until there is an abundance of gas then when you try to start the engine the gas needs to clear before it will start and your smelling all that raw fuel being pushed out of the tail pipe. If you are mechanically inclined then remove the fuel rail and while watching the tips turn the key to the on position. CAUTION: DO NOT try to start the engine, simply turn the key to the on position. If one are more injectors are leaking after turning the key off then replace the leaking injectors. NOTE: Sometimes carbon build-up on the injector tip will also cause then to leak. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Sean.
Well, yes the tank is under pressure at times, but the gauge problem is probably the sending unit. Every few minutes the computer tries to vent the tank to the vapor canister and the engine which would be affected by the leaking gasket. You will probably need to replace the sending unit and then you can fix the seal too. Once the seal is disturbed it usually does not fit the hole.
I would check the inline fuel filter to see if it needs replacing. Sounds like the fuel line is losing prime which could either mean a fuel pump going bad or a faulty fuel pressure regulator or even a loose fitting in the fuel line somewhere. Does the car smell like gas when it sits a while? They might signify leaking fuel line. Check your oil, does it smell like gas? That could signify a faulty fuel pressure regulator that is dumping fuel when the car is shut off which drains down to the crankcase. I would guess fuel pump though.
don't know year make model but if you can smell gas and you see wetness underneath you should have it checked out. a small leak even though your not loosing much gas can be deadly especially if vehicle is in a garage or closed area cause the gas vapor is more of a problem than raw gas. there are lots of places that the leak could be coming from tank, lines, filter, evap system or the charcoal canister. much better to be safe than sorry, no need to have a major problem (possibly life threatening) develop over something that may be able to be fixed before hand.
I had this problem. The fuel pressure regulator was leaking gas. $50-$100 for a replacement. It is not safe to drive around if you have a gas leak - could start a fire. Look under the hood to find where the gas is leaking, should be easy to see/smell when the car is running. If you cannot find it, take it in to a shop right away.
