I am pretty sure I have some sort of exhaust leak yet I do not know where it is coming from. What would be the best way to narrow down problem issues, ie, it may be something else wrong, catilitic converter, or just a cracked flex pipe, etc

As Ray said, a mechanic is the best bet . A lifter, bad belt , exhaust leak and any rotating pulley can sound similar and you need it narrowed down to exactly what needs fixing .
put some UV dye in the oil crankcase run the engine, then will idling use the yellow glasses and the UV light that come with the kit and make sure the vehicle has the full amount of oil before you start this process
mostly it could be a cam seal or crankshaft seal but still you the dye
Check your radiator hoses going into your engine. Best case, you may just have a leak that is dripping onto your engine, hence the smell. Worst case, take a look at your exhaust when your car is operating at normal temperature. If there is white smoke coming out, you may have a cracked engine block, the coolant is leaking into your engine and produces white smoke from your exhaust when it is burned.
Hello, Can you start with about where it appears to be leaking from or around? There are a dozen places or problems you can have, we just need to narrow down the possibilities a bit. Let me know what you see N I'll help as best as possible.
is it an overhead cam motor? if not most likely the hydraulic lifters. its pretty common for gm engines (all the 96 and up vortecs do it) if the piston was hitting anything it wouldnt be a clicking noise, and your knock sensor would shut down the engine. however being that it comes from just one side of the motor im almost certain its an exhaust leak at the manifold. those are your options but im certain its an exhaust leak. hope this helps
It is possible that something got spilled onto the exhaust manifold and is burning off. If the smell doesn't go away with a bit of time make sure there is not an oil leak or other fluid leak underhood. Another possibility is that an animal had climbed into the engine compartment and had made some sort of a mess - I have seen it happen before and critters can make a mess sometimes.
get the exhaust system inspected / checked . You may have a hole in it and exhaust fumes are coming into the cabin somehow.
Carbon monoxide poisoning may be a problem that may lead to fatal consequences.
Hi There;
This is kind of an open question isn't it?
You might have a head gasket leaking or a heater core leaking or the radiator could be leaking or a heater hose or a casting plug (frost plug), might be rusted out & leaking, I'ld like to narrow it down for you but... your best bet is to park the car some where there is no stains on the ground. let it sit. then later move the car & try to find out what area the puddle is at. I might be able narrow it down for you. The biggest issue is with a 14 year old car it's gonna be hard to pin point it for you just because there is so many possibilities.
Most common leak would be the side tanks on the radiator. check for moistness along the edge of the fins on the rad or coolant pooling below the radiator.
Please get back to me if you need more input.
Good luck, Hope this helps
Farrout!
put a vacuum guage on the intake I hope its an automatic one foot on the brake and one on the gas in drive slowly accelarate if the vacuum falls to or near O as you accelerate you have a restricted exhaust,
If this information is helpful to you please give me a fixya! Rating
