Audi a4 cabriolet 2004 car the cd players works fine but not the radio. I took the plug of at the back of the unit and found out: 1.if you put just the centre wire of the antenna radio cable in to the unit it works. but 2. if you touch the outer cable to the outside of where the outer cable goes the signal is lost. Why could this be??

You have what is called a short in the antenna. mosy likely you will need to replace the antenna and reroute it.
Someone may have - just speculation but they may have had the dash out to replace say a heater core and then they routed the antenna wire and shorted it out.
You might be better off just taking it to a stereo shop and paying 10 bucks for their opinion.
Take the radio out to where the tech can get to it and let him look it over - then put it back your self. A Humble request and a 10.00 tip can go a long way here.

print this out and show the tech - he might give his eyes on advice free.
Best of it

Cable running from tuner box in boot lid breaks in the rubber grommet between the lid and the body. To check it is this turn on radio and set to a loud volume, open the boot lid and pull on the grommet by the left hinge, see if you get radio reception cutting in and out. If you do this co axial cable requires replacing, it runs from the boot lid all the way to the radio so I reccommend a specialist repairing it, ideally a Audi one.

No radio reception on 2003 Audi A-4 Cabriolet Convertible

After reviewing the feedback on these postings I identified the problem them took it to my local car stereo shop. I showed them how by raising and lowering the trunk the signal went in and out. They fixed it for $60 by splicing in some new coax cable. It works great.

Access to 2004 Audi A4 radio; purpose: connect USB/MP3 interface

Nope - you need the radio removal keys. You should see some small holes or slots near the edge of the faceplate - there are keys that go into them to unlock the radio. A stereo shop will have them - they may even pull the deck for you if you ask nicely. Only takes a few seconds, and it saves you having to buy the keys.
