Re: I need to replace the belt. I am by-passing the
Serpentine belt, correct? You'll need to find the correct belt size for an Exploder w/out AC. You may need to remove the AC compressor, if the pulley is in the way.

Call your local parts store and see if there is a "by-pass" pulley assembly available for the year make and model of vehicle. I believe that the Uplander runs the 3.4 or 3.5 liter engine and if available you will have to evacuate the A/C system and remove the A/C compressor and install the by-pass pulley assembly, it usually requires the same belt that the compressor would use so if the belt is ok, reuse belt. If not available , you could buy a used compressor and install it without recharging and it would act as a good pulley so the rest of the accessories would work with the belt back on.
Removal ProcedureCaution: When working with any type of glass or sheet metal with exposed or rough edges, wear approved safety glasses and gloves in order to reduce the chance of personal injury. Important: Before cutting out a stationary window, apply a double layer of masking tape around the perimeter of the painted surfaces and inner trim of the window.
Use safety glasses and gloves.
Carefully spread the handle retainer outward in order to release the latch pin from the latch.
There is a "by-pass" pulley and bracket assembly you can purchase that will replace the A/C compressor. Once you install the "by-pass" pulley you will be able to use the same belt. Any questions, let me know. Regards,

You need to have an automotive technitian install a new belt because there is a certain path the belt must follow before it will go on, plus the belt must go around the A/c as it is part of the path. You just don't have to use the A/C.
Tell the tech that the belt broke so that he can look for a reason as to why the belt broke.

the belt tensioner has a pulley that is in-line with the rest of the pulleys, but it is a small one. it has a little bit of an arm that mounts either to the engine or a bracket to the engine. it puts a down force on the belt keeping it tight. when you go to remove the old belt, you will have to use either a wrench or ratchet to pull up on the tensioner (do not let the tensioner snap back into place). install in reverse order. go to the local parts store and take the old belt(if it still exists) and tell them what the problem is and how you plan to fix it with a shorter belt taking the a/c compressor out of play. and go from there.
You do not have to remove the actual sprocket to install the timing belt only the balancer/lower pulley. Just push the tensioner all the way to the pass. side and install your belt, and release the tensioner.
