It is NOT good to disconnect the battery with the engine running as you could destroy the computer!!

Charge volts with digital multi meter shouild be 13.8v-14.4v...if low then battery must be fully charged to check charge rate.

Wasn't charging. changed battery and alternator. by the gauge it shows 14 volts but with the truck running and i unhook the battery it dies.

Not on new vehicles , you never ever pull a battery cable while it is running ! A voltage spike can take out electronic components ! That was 60's an maybe a few 70's vehicles ! That change when they started using transistors in voltage regulators an in engine modules. If it is show 14 volts it's charging ! I will send a link on how you test the charging system. How can i know if my voltage regulator is working, Im not getting any of my lights to work

quick check is to remove a battery cable while the motor's running. If the motor stays running when you pull off the battery cable, the charging system is functioning properly, if it dies then there is a problem with the charging system. Don't leave it off long, as this test is stressful to the circuit. You can test the voltage regulator by putting a volt meter across the battery posts to verify voltage. A fully charged 12 Volt battery should show slightly above 12 volts DC. With the engine running and the volt meter hooked to the battery, the charging system should be showing around 13.8 volts DC.

Could be either one or both get the battery charged if you have another vehicle hook up cables and see if it takes a charge for about 30 min DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE FOR ANY REASON JUST PRESS YOUR REMOTE TO SHUT OFF THE ALARM SO IT DOESN'T GO INTO THEFT MODE AND PREVENT STARTING WHEN I WANT YOU TO START IT OK THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU FOLLOW WHAT I'M TELLING YOU OTHERWISE YOU WILL DRAIN THE BATTERY FROM CRANKING IN THEFT MODE ///////NEXT AFTER THE 30- 45 MINUTES OF CHARGING THERE SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT POWER TO START AND RUN THE ENGINE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR BATTERY HAS DISTILLED WATER IN IT IF YOU HAVE CAPS? ON IT BEFORE YOU START THE CHARGING PROCESS NOW FOR A SECOND OR 2 HONK THE HORN AND SEE IF YOU HAVE HEADLIGHTS A LOUD HORN AND STRONG LIGHTS WILL SHOW A CHARGE IF YOU HAVE A VOLT METER CHECK FOR VOLTAGE BETWEEN 12.5 TO 13.5 VOLTS IF YOU HAVE THE VOLTS THATS GOOD NOW START THE ENGINE IF THE BATTERY LIGHT IS ON IN THE DASH THE ALTERNATOR MAYBE BAD CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AGAIN WITH THE METER IT SHOULD BE 14.4 IF YOU DON'T HAVE A VOLT METER QUICKLY DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CABLES WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING IF IT DIES THE ALTERNATOR IS BAD THE MOTOR SHOULD KEEP RUNNING OFF THE ALTERNATOR POWER THAT IT IS GENERATING SO GOOD LUCK I'M SORRY IF I LISTED THINGS OUT OF ORDER I'M A TAXI MECHANIC IN NYC WITH 50 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE BUT I'VE BEEN WORKING FOR 16 HOURS TRYING TO GET CARS RUNNING FROM VERY HEAVY RAIN HERE TODAY THE DRIVERS AREN'T SMART ENOUGH TO SLOW DOWN WHEN GOING THROUGH FLOODED ROADS AND HUGE PUDDLES AND I'M BY MYSELF THE OTHER 2 GUYS ARE OUT WITH THE SUPER BOWL FLU SO I'M TRYING TO HELP YOU ON MY LUNCH BREAK AND IN BETWEEN VEHICLES SO PLEASE READ EVERYTHING FIRST PUT DISTILLED WATER IN THE BATTERY FIRST IF YOU CAN OTHERWISE CHARGE IT AND DO THE REST DESCRIBED OK GOOD LUCK STEPHEN

Suddenly cut off after lossing electrical power on all inside lights and gauges. also has low charge. is it the alternator or battery? also the o2 wire is disconnect

there may be a short on the battery (most likely) yet you can get it checked for free at any local (national chain) auto parts store they will check both at no charge to you and offer replacements remanufactured alternators usually they have in stock.

Your alternator may be on it's last leg. Start the car and while the car is running, remove the negative cable from the battery. If the car dies, the alternator is no longer working. If you have a volt meter, put the meter on the battery positive and negative. You should read 13.8 - 14.2. If it doesn't show this, and reads under that, your alternator is not charging enough to keep your accessories going.

depending on how new your truck is you may not be able to disconect the battery and keep it running there are just so many electrical things in cars now adays that the altnator alone just cant keep up with every thing at idle you may want to go to a local scrap yard and get a whole dash cluster or check all your fuses again first

Just put a new battery and alternator in my 89 f150 but the guage on the dash does not show that the battery is being charged, how can you tell if gauge is bad

check if it charging first---start engine ,idle at over 1000rpm and then take a battery lead off and if engine stops then its not charging ,if it keeps running thenm its charging and then check the gauge

CHG Light Showing, in our 81 Corolla CS what dose this mean?

Your chg light is your charging system. It could be your alternator, battery, cables, wires etc. Generally pretty easy to diagnose with a multimeter. To check the alternator the old fashion way, you can start the car and disconnect the battery while it is running. If the engine stops then the alternator definately has a problem. This is not recommended as it is much safer to use a multimeter.

Charging trouble, but alternator is good

I'd start it up, disconnect the positive battery terminal whilst car is running, if it keep running altinator is ok,

I'd suggest the problem might be your regulator
