The Ford has some links to VW systems, like the Galaxy is the same as the VW Sharan. This particular VW I have quoted will not go into reverse if the reversing/backup light is faulty. Check that by checking the bulbs, fuse and switch.
sounds like the switch which is at the front middle of the gearbox easy to get too, unless its a auto which although i customer with a auto version i havent done any work to the gearbox apart from top it up with oil,i have a diesel ford galaxy manual which is the same but with a ford badge and its a lovely motor although the paint has faded with the sunlight here in spain .

Hi Paul, Most of these gearboxes were almost identical for vw during the those years, some manuals are available free from this site http://carservicemanuals.blogspot.com/search/label/Volkswagen Hope it will help you out. Dave
you need a haynes manual.because some new cars dont have dip stick to check tranny fluid.you have to locate a check fill plug on automatic transmission differential.its located on the right side.front of drive axle.for volkswagon you got buy the tool to squirt fluid in tranny.still get a manual it will show you place to put tranny oil.
