I have a '04 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. Off and on, started making a loud whining noise when turning left, and on acceleration, it would get louder. Took it to Carmax, Henderson (where I bought it) and they said, ''Oh, its the power steering fluid is at minimal level.'' Took it home, started grinding when turning left and on acceleration shortly after, took it back. They say, ''Oh we don't see the problem, seems to be normal. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If you have a warranty from your dealer, you paid for it, or whether it came with it, it doesn't matter, you MAKE them honor it. Take it back there, and MAKE THEM FIX IT! This shouldn't be your problem if you have a warranty. If they aren't honoring it, threaten them with the BBB or court. They will shape up.
I would say power steering pump.First check to make sure there is fluid in the reserve tank and at the proper level if not top it off and whine should stop.If level is correct then maybe try flushing with fresh fluid.
3.8L engine the power steering fluid was never toped/checked.. because it is a pain in the *** to get at (behind the hot as hell alternator), so it probably ran dry, top it up is probably all you have to do.. if the whining presists then you will have to try and bleed the air out by jacking it up, engine off, turn the wheel one side to the other about 25 times.. if that dont quiet it up then you will have to replace the power steering pump.
Power steering pump / fluid level is not hard to check - it is located below the alternator on the passenger side of the engine bay. You need a light to see it. You can get your hand down from the top of the engine to loosen and remove the cap/dipstick.

Good luck and thank you for using Fixya
If power steering fluid level is full and whine noise happens after engine and trans is warm and been driven for a while it could be a trans problem. This make and model trans is noted for having a sticking EPC(electronic pressure control) solenoid inside the trans. The trans controller detects an internal trans slip and starts jacking up line pressure which makes the trans pump whine, it sounds just like a power steering pump. When this happens it will also start shifting gears very hard. Take vehicle to a trans shop and have them check it, there will most likely be a code P1811-long shift, max. adapt met. This code means the controller has seen an internal trans component slipping and has jacked up the line pressure to the max position and the slip is still present. Unfortunately this is not a repair that can be completed at home as the trans needs to come out and apart.
Hope this helps.

I have an 2004 pontiac grand prix and im experiencing the same issues. Only when im starting to accelerate i hear a whining noise. I have took it to 3 shops everyone is telling me the noise is normal when i no its not. The power steering fluid level im told is good. I was thinking maybe the transmission because a lot of shops wanted me to get a transmission flush, but with 97,000 miles GM said i dont need it, so i went to a fourth shop and they told me i needed a water pump the bearings is bad, so i did the water pump and the noises wasnt loud as usual, but now it started back. So now im told maybe i need a power steering flush/ pump. How did your issues turn out with the dealer? -krspeed004
I took it and got a second opinion, the shop I took it to told me it needed the bearings replaced and that more than likely my extended warranty would not cover it ($600), he had been dealing with warranties for 20 years.I was also told by a couple mechanics to the get the trans flush. I then took it to Pontiac Dealership where they agreed that the bearings needed to be changed, they repaired it and the warranty covered it. ($450). The noise lessened and eventually stopped all together and have not heard it since. I have yet to get the Trans flushed though.
Everytime I step on the gas in my 2005 Pontiac grand prix it makes a whinning noise so I took it to my mechanic he said it was my alternater so he fix it and the noise was still there then he told me it was water pump he fixed that and then the noise was still happening when I pressed on gas so I took it back a third time not knowing what he did n it stopped but 3 weeks later the noise started again but even louder WHAT SHOULD I DO

I also have the same issue with my 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. When I turn left and accelerate, I hear the whining noise. The guy at the lube shop told me I need a power steering fluid flush. He also showed me the metal deposits that were in the resevoir; if not flushed soon this could affect my water pump and other things. He said it would be $59.99 to get the P/S flushed.

Thanks, I really appreciate your responses. At least I have somewhat idea on what to get checked. . It stopped whining when the fluid was filled, but now it grinds on left turns. So, I will take it to pontiac now and have them check it out.
I took it and got a second opinion, I was told it was the bearings, this shop told me that more than likely my extended warranty would not cover this repair($600) and that he had dealt with warranties for 20 years. It was thentaken to Pontiac Dealership, and they changed the bearings, my warranty covered the repair, (about $450) and I was told the Trans fluid needed to be flushed a couple times by different mechanics. The noise did lessen after the bearings were replaced and finally it stopped. I have yet to get the transmission flushed though.
