the fuel gauge works on an electric pulse. if it is unplugged it will go to empty if it is plugged i it will go up as fare as the tank is full. if it goes higher then the known fuel lvl. you have a bad gauge if it goes up and down when you know it is full you have a bad connection
I can only think of two possibilities: 1) The Ground Wire (goes from the sending unit in the fuel tank to the frame of the car) is not getting a good connection or 2) The fuel gauge in the dashboard is bad.
If your description means that the change in the gas gauge is random then check the ground wire. If you have a volt-ohm meter, try checking the resistance from the wire where it attaches to the sending unit, negative side. Remove wire from sending unit first. Make sure negative wire on V_O meter is connected to frame of car. Reading should be almost zero. Anything else and the wire you are testing does not have a good connection. If your description means that you turn the car on and the gas gauge is reading full for awhile and then goes to empty, the gas gauge is bad.
You have a bad ground, you will have to remove the fuel tank and check the connectons on top of the tank, probably corroded. You can clean the terminals or change them.
You need to check voltage at the gauge on the dash. They would stop at random places with the key off. You can disconnect the sending unit in the tank and ground the gauge to test. Some models read empty with high resistance from the sender, some are opposite depending on the sending unit. The sending unit in the tank is a resistance bar for the ground circuit.
faulty sender unit in the tank ,its swollen slightly and its sticking on the shaft ,common problem with a lot of vehicles ,or the float fills with petrol and it shows empty .
sending unit on fuel pump is bad, the sending unit shorts out gauge will go to empty or full, never read right, turn on switch ,it goes to full or empty, ,check the pump, hope this helps, thanks robert b.
