There is a cable that connects the transmission to the throttle boday on the engine. It hooks up to the same place as the gas pedal. Make sure this cable is moving freely. Its is called a detent cable or better known as the passing gear cable. If it is getting stuck or it is to tight it will hold the car in first gear til you reach a high RPM.

Had check engine and AT light come on going down hill today. need help diagnosing

Likely an issue with the transmission. Check the transmission oil level with the engine running. If too high or low, then have a garage check your system. The 6 is sometimes prone to obvious transmission wear around 150,000 plus km.
