It could be either. Use a block of wood or a screwdriver or for 9.99 at any autozone you can get a mechicanics stehoscope<(spelled wrong lol) Start the engine and climb under the truck. Listen closley to where the sound is comming from. If its more in the oil pan its probably a rod if its further towards the rear of the engine It may be the torque converter or flywheel
As far as I know ... You cannot drive car of any description without the bell housing, water hole or not. The bell housing is connected to the front of the transmission and is how the transmission is connected to the engine. Inside the bell housing is the clutch (or torque converter) ... In the case of a front wheel drive vehicle, that part MIGHT be called something else.
Ticking could be a dozen things ... a dry lifter or a pulley, or the air pump or a stick hitting the fan. It could be a rod, but I would characterize that kind of noise as more of a knocking sound.
I don't know where you got your information, but I suggest you take your vehicle to a repair shop and have a mechanic evaluate your noise.
