I had the same message. 2002 lesabre with a 3.8 engine. The cause was the vacuum hose that runs across the front of the engine with the 180 rubber hose on the left side. There are actually 2 hoses that come off the air intake. The small one goes to the top of the engine. The one with the 180 goes to a sensor. It is a $25 dealer item. To get to it I had to remove the plastic cover on top of the engine. Twist off the oil filler tube to remove the cover.

2 things if you live near a Auto Zone they will check out the check engine light.(if you live near one) The way you will know it is there is no pressure when you take off the gas cap. if the cap is good there should be a realease of air. you wil lhear it ck
Is it possible that your getting bad gas in your area? since it ran fine on the trip and now that your back home its not? maybe try a different gas station. if not you'll probably have to take it to a well equipped shop to have it hooked up to a scan tool that can read data while your driving to see the ecm info when the problem occurs.good luck as intermittent engine problems can be difficult sometimes.
In theory the light will reset after the system has passed a minimum of three self tests during 3 drive cycles but it can take several days for this to happen as the tests are run only under very specific conditions and may not run at all during an average drive. I would have the service code checked [just to be certain it was turned on due to a loose fuel cap and not something else that could be more serious] and if that was the problem the code can be cleared/reset at that time.
It's an Evaporative Emission Control Malfunction. Sometimes as simple as a new gas cap. If you recently put gas in your car and left it running while doing it, this would give you that code
that code is indigitus to the purge solinoid
if the purge solinoid gets stuck or fails you get a red light follow the lines that come off the engine the purge is eather on the back of the engine or firewall
also check you steel lines under your car to make sure that you don.t have a bent or hole in them also check or have you cap checked
get the fuel cap pressure tested and replace if it is bad. if the fuel cap is bad the engine light will go out on its own. If it does not take i t to a garage and they will erase trouble codes for you.
P0401 sets when EGR flow test runs and fails. EGR may be moving too slow or not at all. May be a bad connection. P0442 sets when vacuum decay test indicates small leak in the EVAP system detected during diagnostic test. Check for a loose or defective gas-cap. If the cap is fine it may be a false code or could be related to another EVAP component.
disconnect the battery and reconnect after 2 min. this will clear all codes and reset the engine light.
but will not fix prolembs for light being on if you have a prolemb the light will come back on , if it does get a scan test done see what codes come up and fix from that point.
