My 97 chevy s-10 pickup is a 5 speed with a 4.3 engine and our truck is stuck in first gear. Should we buy a new one or have someone look at it?

ahh is this a standard shift? 3/4/5 speed? if-so, then drop down a gear and floor it! if it is auto-matic there was no passing gear in that tranny?!lol.

Just about all you can do is, with the engine off, from under the hood open the throttle all the way and check if the TV cable is tight. And check the fluid level, smell if its burnt or look if its brown.

Other causes could be,
Sticky governor
Sticking shift valve
Worn bands

Many years ago my mom's first 4 speed automatic was a 84 S10 2.8 2wd. She did not know it was a 4 speed and the indicator was broke so she counted the clicks to find drive. She was driving in the hills in over drive and all the downshifting was too much for it (should have driven in hills in 3rd gear). After that the transmission would not shift out of second gear.

Does the odometer work?If so the priblem is in the circuit board in the instument cluster.The resistance on both wires going to speed sensor should be 5 ohms or a little less.If it is greater than that you probaly have a bad connection at pcm or a bad cluster.

You don't provide much information to go on (type of vehicle, type of engine, 2wd or 4wd, etc.) RPM is always going to be based on the speed you're traveling with a standard transmission. My 4 cyl 5 speed Nissan pickup in 5th gear runs at 3000 RPM at about 75mph.

You can remove the interlock off the gear shift or maybe spray some crc on it otherwise probably a loose wire or switch

it sounds like you have a vaccum leak more than likely. check near the intake manifold near the fire wall there are several vaccum lines there. also remove the the breather hose and check that your throttle plate is not sticking(this of course only applies if you have fuel injection. if you have a tbi or it's carburated check the throttle linkage to see if it's perhaps sticking

1. Remove the column shroud halves.
2. Remove the column-to-dash mounting bolts and slowly lower steering column down. Be sure it is supported.
3. Remove multifunction switch if necessary.
4. Remove key alarm switch, if equipped, by gently prying the retaining clips with a small screwdriver. rotate alarm switch 1/4 turn and remove.
5. Make sure the switch is in the lock position, if lock cylinder is out push rod up to stop and then do down one detent.
6. remove the two screws and remove.

BE SURE TO SUPPORT THE COLUMN. Installation is reverse, must be in lock position for reinstall.
