while going up hill the engine started to shake and engine light came on. The transmission shifts hard and sometimes sticks in lower gears. I replaced the spark plugs and wires.

With the ignition key off, Turn to the on then off then on position and leave it on and count the blinks with the engine light. This will be an engine code. Let me know what ya find out.

I have a 1996 mitsubishi eclipse spyder automatic and the check engine light was on,had it checked the prndl sensor, and when going up hill or in general it will occasionally stick in a gear?

Yes it sounds like your transmission is starting to give.. or your low on fluid
