Look on top of the oil filter housing, I believe you should see 2 oil pressure sending units there wired separately. One is for low speed pressure and one is for high speed pressure. Often the wiring for these sending units will fray and break off inside the rubber boot. Check and repair if necessary. Also trace the wires back and look for chaffed insulation. Tape up any spots that you find. VW's have no tolerance for these kinds of things.
If the sending units are bad it is most likely the brown one which is the one for low speed. The second one may be white or black and will only activate over 2000 RPM. It will flash the light and sound a buzzer. To check the brown sending unit, let the engine run. The oil light should go out when you disconnect the wire from the sending unit. If it does then the sending unit is bad. If it doesn't then the problem is in the wiring or no pressure. To check the high speed unit, it's the opposite. Run the engine at 2500 RPM and disconnect the wire. The light should flash and the buzzer will sound.
To check the oil pressure with a mehanical guage it should be 29psi at 2000RPM. These are from a mid 90's 2 liter 16 valve but should put you in the ball park. Hope this helps.
That would be the high speed oil pressure sensor telling you there is a problem with your oil pressure.Your computer is reading insufficient oil pressure to maintain engine integrity above 2000RPM.
There are 2 oil sending units mounted on top of the oil filter housing. I don't have wiring for your year so I can't tell you for sure, but on my 1992 they are brown ( low pressure) and white (high pressure). Check the wiring carefully for cracks or bare spots in the insulation and fix any you find. Also make sure the wiring is good at the plug-ins. VW wiring won't tolerate cracks and often will break right where it meets the plug-in. Also if you have recently moved these wires you may have plugged them in wrong. I would most definately get the pressure checked with a mechanical oil pressure guage to be sure of the pressure. If it's good, 29 PSI at 2000 RPM then I would be looking at a bad sending unit. Hope this helps.
Oil pressure can be checked at the sending unit passage with an externally mounted mechanical oil pressure gauge. To get accurate results from the test, make sure you follow the manufacturer's recommendations and compare your findings to specifications. Testing the Oil Pressure Gauge
Test the gauge by grounding the wire that leads to the sending unit on the block.
When the wire is disconnected from the sending unit with the key switch on, the needle on the oil pressure gauge should be either all the way high or all the way low. Grounding the wire should make the needle move to the opposite side of the gauge from where it was before the wire was grounded. If the vehicle is equipped with an oil pressure light, touching the wire to ground and then removing the wire from ground should turn the light on and off.
If either happens, the gauge and wiring are good and the sending unit is at fault.
Testing Oil Pressure
Pressure can be tested by temporarily installing an oil pressure gauge in place of the sending unit. Before testing, look up the oil pressure specifications for your vehicle in the appropriate service manual.
Bring the engine up to operating temperature.
Now shut the engine off.
Locate the oil pressure sending unit; usually it is on the lower side of the engine block.
Disconnect the wire from the sending unit and use an open ended wrench to remove the sender. Using pliers can damage the unit.

Check the engine's oil level and fill, if required.
WARNING
Be extremely careful when working near a running engine. Always wear safety goggles or glasses with side shields when working around moving machinery and be sure that your clothing is not loose.
Now turn the engine on and check the oil pressure on the gauge.
Watch as the engine warms to note any excessive drops due to temperature.
Make sure the engine speed is set to specifications for testing pressure.
If necessary, us a tachometer and adjust the engine idle speed.
Record the measured oil pressure, then turn off the engine.
Compare the test results with the manufacturer's specifications.
If the oil pressure is within specifications, this shows that the oil pressure sending unit may not be working correctly.
In many cases, replacing the oil sending unit will correct the problem.
After the test is complete, reinstall the oil pressure sending unit, start the engine, and confirm there are no leaks.
