I put the key in the ignition but I can't get it to move beyond the "I" position.

    I took the ignition switch apart. I pushed on the part that comes from the ignition swith that rotates when you turn the key cylinder while moving the key and it unlocked it. I think the problem is going to come back again. I read some postings about this same issue and most people end up replacing the lock and tumbler mechanism.

SOURCE: I have a 97 camry. I put my ket in the ignition

try putting tension on steering wheel in either direction while turning key. If no results, ignition switch may be defective.

Hi there,
try turning the wheel to the right/left while turning the key in the ignition. You have to apply some force. Your car is probably outliving its road life.

you never describe what type of fuel does your car use... is it a diesel or petrol engine? if its a diesel engine then i have the correct sollution that can help you. the problem will be on the injector pump, on the main switch. change the switch and the problem will be solved. or check whether power reaches there. when it reaches then is the injector switch doesnt work to close the main valve that the car can switch off. all the best

How too change the ignition switch on a 88

disconnect negative battery cable.place the ignition lock in the off lock position. remove the 2 switch mounting screws.disconnect the switch from the rod.disconnect the wiring and remove the switch.TO INSTALL.ignition switch installation for non tilt columns.move the the ignition switch slider to the off unlocked position move the slider all the way down.then back 2 clicks.the remote rod hole in the ignition switch slider should now be centered.insert the remote rod in the ignition switch slider hole and install the ignition switch on the steering column.tighten the attaching screws to 35 inch lbs.ignition switch installation for tilt columns.insert the ignition key in the lock cylinder and turn the cylinder to the off unlock position.move the ignition switch downward to eliminate any slack and tighten the attaching screws to 35 inch lbs.

1996 Ford Explorer key to ignition switch loose

sound like the tumbler is falling out, when you open the steering column there should be a hole where a small but solid object can go in.. this release the tumbler but only when the key it turn at a certain position you will feel the pin in the hole go inwards then you can slide it out...it could be defective or just need to place back properly..hope this help..

you have to turn the steering wheel a little back and forth hard until it releases it probably locked in hard when you parked it there is tension on it just move it back and forth some and it will release
