if you have a leak from the back of the rack your sector shaft seal is defective. to replace it you need to remove the rack and do it on the bench.remove the locking nut and pull the seal from inside.if you are a rooky replace the rack with a rebuild one. good luck.

SOURCE: rack and pinion leak

It needs replaced a rebuilt unit cost $350.00 and you need the tools to remove the tie rod ends and you have to unhook the steering wheel, if you have a hoist it's not to bad but a do it yourselfer it's a pretty big job, the fluid is that color because it's sucking air into the fluid because of the leak and the shaking is caused by one side not holding hydrolic pressure because of the leak and wore out inner tierod ends. If you do do it you need a whole lot more information and much more instructions to do it, afterwords it will have to be alingned, having done it before and having the proper air tools I can do one in three hours. You might take a week but it would be a learning experince.

SOURCE: replacing power steering hose and rack and pinion steering

when it comes to the power steering hose I would say just do it yourself. As for the rack and pinion it will probably cost you quite a few hours of labor. anywhere from 5-9. Its up to you!

My power steering fluid is leaking

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Where does it leak? On the rack and pinion or on the power steering tank? If it's from the tank then it's just gonna be a hose problem will surely need replacement. If it's underneath the rack and pinion then the oil seals are surely worn out. This will need to be pulled out to gain access to the rack and pinion oil seals. Once they are replaced it will surely stop the leak.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

I went to drive my car to work this morning and lost the power steering feels like it locked up the leak of power steering fluidf is leaking from the rack and pinion not pump

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

If that's the case then the oil seals of the rack and pinion should be replaced. If the seals are worn out it tends to leak and can definitely feel a loss of power. If it still leaks even after the replacement then the rack and pinion should be replaced.

There are instances that after oil seal replacement it still leaks it's because that the rack and pinion has severe damage.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Rack and pinion vibrate badly after installation. starts to vibrate (back and forth motion of the steering wheel of approx 2 inches each way) after trying to move the steering wheel.

The rack is incorrectly installed in the chassis of the truck and its position isn't fixed - it shifts around the securing bolts. The vibration is caused by the pressure of the servo pump and the movement of the pinion: when the rack moves even by a little fraction by itself but the steering wheel doesn't follow it accordingly then the pinion is forced to rotate a tiny bit more than it should and that is enough to open the valves of the servo and the oil pressure presses on the rack moving it all the way to one side with force. When the movement stops because the rack has nowhere to go no more the pinion stops and the valve close, the oil pressure drops, the force on the rack drops and it tends to go back to its original position. That opens the valves again, but in the opposite direction so the rack is slammed on the opposite side. The process continues as long as the steering wheel is turned , generating that vibration.
This is a very dangerous situation, the car is not safe to be driven on any distance, at any speed. Tow it to a repair shop and have the steering mechanism in its entirety inspected, most likely it will be necessary to replace it completely.

Rack and pinion or steering kit

your vehicle has a transverse mounted engine and most newer vehicls have rack and pinion steering versus a shaft going to a gear box with a drag link and sway bar type steering system. most full size suvs have the gear box set up. some suvs like dodge durango have both a gear box and a rack and pinion. your vehicle has only the rack and pinion
