does it have the 4.0L motor ? if so open the hood stand off to the side where the exhaust bots to the head and have some one rev it up quick if its coming fron under the hood by the engine the exhaust manifol is cracked. The 4.0L jeeps have had lots of problems with this.

and smelly, the tranny clutches might be worn out. Make sure you have
enough fluid in there first. Check the fluid with the car engine
running and the tranny in park. The level should be between the 2 marks.
