My 2003 Jaguar S-Type has a faulty Reverse Park Control system. When shifting into Reverse gear, a constant tone sounds until the gear is shifted into a forward gear or neutral. What are the usual causes for this fault? Can it be repaired easily and cheaply? If not, can the system be disconnected, and how?

sounds like the j gate is faulty poss the release solenoid or wiring from memory i think the signal to release the gearshift comes from the abs module on the can network.

You're probably shifting wrong. Or there's a problem with your gear ratio or clutch. are you grinding the gears or is it just shifting weird?

It can be issue with transmission,most probably it needs to be rebuilt.

Also get the ****** fluid checked. If it's low, then such problems occurs.

most new cars have a brake depression that only allows the shift lever to be moved when the brake pedal is pressed

your linkage may need adjusting. I had a problem like this when I put it in park, my reverse lights were on and it wouldnt re-start until i shoved the gear shift hard into park. Check this out first.

Sounds like a faulty trans. shift cable or loose cable linkage. Probably need to replace cable.

If you think the car thinks it's in reverse when you have it in park, try dropping down a gear to neutral and try starting it. I own the same vehicle and I know it has an audible alarm if you try to move the gear shifter when the key is off and the selector is locked in place. I'd go through the entire range of the gear selector (both sides) to see if you might have a problem with the linkage or if the transmission has a problem that is not allowing it to go into park. It also has a park/neutral safety which which stops the vehicle from starting in any gears. The tcm mainly controls the functions of your transmission like the ecu (electronic control unit/computer) does with your engine controls. You may also be able to scan your vehicle for any trouble codes present in your transmission they will be either p0700-800 series code.

This is normal when gear shift is in park. When footbrake is depressed a mechanism in the J gate releases the gear shift so that it can be shifted out of the park position. The clicking noise is is the sound of the mechanism.

no recals but if you are the oreginal owner you have untill 2010or 80,000 miles before the warranty runs out, and if you are past that I bleive you will need a T.C.M transmission control module.
