Heater Core in Jeep Grand Cherokee 1999

There's a constant smell in our 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee ... a sharp, musty, chemical smell. Seems to be worse when the air system is on. I think it's probably a cracked heater core. Does that sound right? If it is the heater core, do you recommend the dealer to get it fixed? Any idea how much it should cost? Thanks!!

Unfortunatly, those are the classic symtoms of a bad
heater core. But just to be sure, check the heater hoses at the firewall and make sure that a loose clamp is not allowing coolant to spray into the car.
I don,t know what the part costs, you can find that out by calling autozone/napa or any parts store.
But there probably will be a slight markup by who ever is to do the job. As for the labor, the book allows
5.9 hours for the job. This will give you a place to
start when you check around for the best price.
If you have a mechanic that you use often(and trust)
ask him/her what it will cost. It's not strictly dealer.
Hope this helps.

I have a 1999 jeep grand Cherokee limited edition my heater only throws out cold air why is that?

this is easy. (are you moving or parked) ill assume stopped.
first is the blower working, (seems so)
ill guess that no heat in all vent modes, and re-circ, on.
next is the engine fully hot, hot means at 180F or more holding
(we measure it with a pyro gun)
next, are both heater core hoses hot/ at the fire wall? and equal at 180f?
yes, good. then the damper is stuck closed i the heater box.
no , then there is heater core blockage. (skipping every 2 year flushes are you, sure...)

it only takes 2 things
hot water ,p[assing through the heater core
and air passing through its fins to get hot cab air.
just 2.

How do i replace/install a heater core for a 1999 limited edition jeep cherokee 4.0 liter 6cyclinder

I would make sure the core is the problem. You may have a heater control valve that cuts off flow to the core by vac. or a blend door that cuts off air flow thru the core.
You will need a shop manual to replace the core. The dash and console have to come out, along with discharging the ac.

Either its the heater core or the thermostat

your heater core is definitley leaking and your blower is pushing the vapor into the cabin. It will only get worse. You can minimize the smell by not running your heater or defroster, but you wont prevent the coolant from leaking and potentially getting worse. Sorry to say, the core will need pulled and repaired or replaced. Sometimes stop leak additives will solve the problem if its not too severe. I have never been a fan of them, its only a band aid in my view. also if u got pets afoid leeting they smell the antifreeze very toxic can kill pets easily. hope this helps. rate above 4* cheers

How to change a heater core in a 93 jeep grand cherokee

When I turn my heater on, after my 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee has warmed up, there is a dusty, watery smell for a few minutes, then it goes away. Also, it doesn't put out as much heat as I think it should. I don't think the heater core has a leak, because I always seem to have the same amount of coolant in the radiator and the heater core is not leaking on the inside of the truck.

Brief antifreeze smell in Jeep

Make sure the cooling system is clean with fresh coolant when u change the core, otherwise u may damge the new core becuase your coolant is worn out, if your Jeep has over 60,000 it should be done anyway, also I recommend at least a new upper radiator hose while it is drainned and inspect the other parts of the system.
