4x4 will not disengage. (04 s10 pu)I pushed the 2wd button heard the vaccum click but did not go into 2wd. now the swiches on the dash only light up 4wd and switches do nothing.

my 2001 chevy silverado would not swich some time and with a lot of agravation of repeat pushing of the buttons. change out the 4x4 switches in the dash solved the problem, the orginal switches soldering cracked makeing for bad connections "transfer case switch" Auto parts warehouse

Usually if you push the button to go back to 2 wheel drive and back up a few feet it will let the axle hub disengage.

The vacuum is to keep the 4x4 disengaged, once vac is removed the IWE ( Integrated wheel end ) is engaged, so the front hubs are locked.

Block diagram from the F150, EXPY should be the same routing ( could be slightly different )


The f150 had a TSB for the IWE solenoid where water could get into the system, and cause the IWE to not be disengaged in 2WD ( slightly engaged, ratcheting the IWE gear ).

If that's a model where you push a "4x4" button to engage it then it's
probably a defective motor that engages/disengages your transmission
from the transfer case. It's bolted onto the transfer case just like a
starter is bolted. Yes, the 4x4 light will sometimes mislead you by
going on or off when you push the button.
Ford charges an arm and leg for their replacement but an aftermarket
one runs about $90 from rockauto.com. Make sure you get any electrical
documentation for this motor to show you how to set up the connections
for your particular vehicle......Ray

Which one of these 4X4's does your vehicle have ?
Transfer Case - NVG 246-NP8 (Two Speed Automatic)
Transfer Case - NVG 261-NP2 (Two Speed Manual)

check all fuses to the 4x4 drive there is2-3 you have to look in your maul. or on the cover it self or it could of come unplug from the back of the push button to

I am not sure about Ford, but several of the 4x4 models use a vacuum hose connected to engine vaccum to switch the 4x4 functions. If you have a push button engage system then you may want to check the rubber hoses around the front drive shaft. This only applies for the push button models.

your problem is in control box located behind pass.side kick panel check elect. connector for corrosion,if light cor.clean it of it will work fine, if its bad may have to change it!
