Battery keeps running down, what is the best way

1991 Chevy k 1500 4x4, battery keeps running down, what is the best way to troubleshoot for a short or ground. Replaced bad alternator and now battery drains over 2-3 days if not driven. Where do I start?

The new alternator may have a closed regulator draining the battery, put a volt meter,or test light in line with the ground cable, remove the ground cable, and put the test light clip on the ground cable, and the tip of the test light to the negative battery post,or contact,it does not have a post,If it lights the test light, and it does not fade off, then there is a draw, unplug the alternator regulator plug, see if that turns the test light off,if it does, then the alternator is defective, then if need to continue testing, remove the interior light fuse, completly, and then pull one fuse at a time,to see if the test light goes off, when it does, that is the circuit that is drawing the battery down. The clocks will pull to many amps sometimes and cause this also,be sure to disconnect the battery over night to make sure the battery is good also,so you wont be doing all this for nothing, and you may want to have the battery load tested.

I had the same problem with my truck, what I did to solve that problem was I changed out the bad alternator, and replaced the positive and negative cables. That seemed to do the trick for me

Disconnect the positive cable then connect a test light between the cable and the positive battery post. if the test light lits then you have a drain. pull the fuse one at a time which ever one get the test light off then that's the one has short.

I would get the alternator checked to make sure it has good voltage. It might be too weak to recharge the battery while running. The other issue could be a bad voltage regulator.

No look for the open to ground at a wire that is causing the drain. you have something pulling the battery down because it is basically on all the time a short to ground.

I have a 40 chevy coupe 6 volt system it keeps killing new battries. What can I do to check were my problem is?

Hello salnsofia: My name is Roger and I can give you some things to look at. First make sure the generator is in good shape. Bad brushes can short out the armature causing a short. I would also check the voltage regulator for burnt points. This will cause a draw on the system that will run a battery down. If you replaced the voltage regulator? If my memory serves me you need to polarize the regulator or it will not charge the battery. This would not take long to run down the battery. The hard part now it trying to remember how simple the old cars were to work on.

check your grounds & the fuel pump connections.the ground should run to the right rear of the motor. look at the wires back to the motor on the frame for anything that may have nicked a wire or a rub thru. You have a short and i belive it shut down if you hit a bump. loose or fraid wire some place. Best of luck & keep us posted on your fix.
