The belt is a couple or three years old but upon a closer inspection it turns out the belt was too loose. so I tightened the bolt on the tensior pully a bit and the belt tighten right up but.... I would say too much. What does that bolt do? I cant seem to get the belt to back off. does it directly tighten the belt?

A belt squeal is normally worse when cold. how long has it been since its been replaced? look at the ribs of the belt to see if you see any cracks in it, like a dry-rot. if its cracking, replace it. also if the belt tensioner is getting weak the lack of tension can cause the belt to slip and squeal. try replacing the belt and while its off spin all the pulleys by hand. when the belt is off is a good time to see if any of the other pulleys bearings are going bad. a good pulley will be silent, a bad one will squeak or make a grating sound. but the squeal while cold is probably just the belt itself.

Hi
Spray the belt with wd40 if it goes quiet then it will be the belt, It may just need to be tightened as they often do after a cold spell, the metal contracts are expands in cold/hot climates.

Have the car running and spray directly onto the altenator and the belt.

If it is still squelling then get the pump checked out.

Hope this helps
Regards
Dan

Hi yes it tightens the belt up by pushing the tensioner away from the altenator just slack it off a little you should be able to hold the belt and slightly twist it, that the correct tension.

I have changed all belt driven systems on the front of my 3800 park avenue and it still sqeals

squeals don't necessarily mean the belts it can be the power steering pump or the belt adjusters, even the water pump and so on adjuster for the belt if the spring adjuster is weak will not put the correct tension on the belt and it will slip, bearings in alternator can squeal when warm or cold depending on the bearing fault after time the rumble and over heat the alternator in turn lose power to the battery, power steering pump this can squeal if the bearing in the pump is dry, or there is a leak as this lets moisture into the pump. hope this helps would first check the belt adjuster and also clean the parts the belt goes round with a wire brush, and repainting them helps them stop rusting up, cheap spray paint and leave to dry before fitting belt, or use brush paint will take longer to dry but will last longer.

Hi my 2007 ford ranger 2.5 tdci (duratorq) has recently developed a high pitched squealing noise akin to a slipping drive belt ,which only occurs under load not at idle. no fault codes no excessive smoke...

Your water pump may need a lubricant. Water pump lubricant is added to the radiator.
When the weather is warm enough, and the engine runs hotter, then the thermostat opens more frequently, the lubricant will mix with the radiator fluid and circulate through the sysem lubricating the water pump.
I had squealing problem after changing the serpentine belt.
Tried changing idler sprocket, no difference.
I added the lubricant to the radiator, unfortunately the weather was cold, and the lubricant did not mix well with the radiator fluid, and did not circulate well do to cold weather and short drives.
Once the weather got warmer and the thermostat opened more often the squealing stopped.

2005 dodge grand caravan 3.3 77000 miles starts and runs fine after initial mid grinding sound goes away approx 1 min and30 seconds warmup belts test good a little shine on major belt o

Sounds like something with bad bearings. Check in the area of air conditioner compressor or power steering and yes water pump.even the belt tightener will do that.

Replaced belts / tension arms alternator, I still every now and then get this loud squeal when engine is cold. And slowly goes away has it warms up. Could it be the water pump. 1999 Corvette.

It can be also due to poor belt or tightness. When the engine is cold pour some water over the belt , if the noise goes off then the belt can be a suspect. Also you can use a candle to rub wax on the edge of the belt and then start the engine, if there is no noise then the belt can be a suspect.
If not check on the IDLER pulley or the bearings in the water pump/alternator.

Thats what it sounds like, you wont have water pump failure or overheating cause the water pump is operating properly. If the bearing goes on it the pump will seeze. Have they checked the idler pulley and belt tensioner pulley they also have bearings?

99 Altima with 190k miles warbling noise

It sounds like your water pump is going it usually vibrates throughout everything if it was your alternator it would show signs with your power the easiest way would to take your belt off remembering the belt route and spin the alternator pulley and the water pump pulley to see if they spin freely without noise

Whining engine

It could be a pully bearing going bad, or your power stearing pump. next time you start it when it's cold try moving your steering wheel left to righ and see if there is any changes. The next time try removing your belt before you start it and see if the noise goes away. The belt could be warn out and hard itll it warms up and soften up. Start with a new belt. Good luck
